American military aid to Pakistan started in 1954, when the USA offered $1 billion in aid to the country after signing a security pact under CENTO. At today's prices (2011) that aid would be around $8 billion, and most of that was military aid including 700 tanks and 102 F-86 Sabre's, and training packages.
This massive mostly military aid bolstered the confidence of the Pakistan military who then went on to take over the country four years later in 1958. Though it must be noted that even before this relationship was solidified in 1954, the Pakistan military were already flexing its muscle from 1951, with the assassination of Liakat Ali Khan and the declaration of martial law in Lahore in 1953....through the strategic planning capabilities of the ISI, established in 1948, and the connivance of certain key senior bureaucrats in the Pakistan Civil Service.(Iskander Mirza)
Thus Field Marshal Ayub Khan ruled Pakistan between 1958--1969 through the good grace of the USA.
Thus General Zia ul Haq ruled Pakistan between 1977--1988 through the good grace and backing of the USA. Carter did not like Bhutto.
Thus General Musharaf ruled Pakistan between 1999--2008 through the good grace and backing of the USA.
The Americans pressured Musharaf out of power, in favor of Zardari........hoping they could gain greater further concessions from him vis a vi American covert and overt security operations in Pakistan.
However this fundamental security relationship between the USA and Pakistan is obviously harming the weaker failed state partner politically, socially, economically ($70 billion losses incurred by some estimates since 2001).........and psychologically with 35,000 civilian deaths so far.
Pakistan cannot forever fight wars against its own people for some false illusionary security objectives of the USA. The top brass of the Pakistan military may be clappy happy about all this as the front and center security agenda of the USA puts them at the "center" of national life....with them giving various interviews as media stars in Pakistan...running the country's FOREIGN and SECURITY policy, and meeting their American counterparts without the permission of the civilian government....BUT.
Pseudo Sade masochistic homosexual driven wars into infinity is not possible for ANY COUNTRY........not even for Israel.
Not even $4-7 billion of official and unofficial annual security aid can sustain the current charade in Pakistan in the present trajectory. The present American twin strategy of maintaining puppet powerless civilian governments in Islamabad, which are appallingly laughingly corrupt and ineffective (as per the opinions of certain British diplomats).......AND an all powerful military which are persuaded towards permanent war against their own people (to fulfill certain strategic objectives of the USA which are not good for Pakistan, and especially the Pakistan military).
The sour fruits of such a policy has become all too evident after 10 years of serious participation by the Pakistan military. This negative situation can no longer be hidden by the best endevours of the ISI, and their ham fisted tactics against the chattering classes.
Rather than understand this REALITY in Pakistan, the Americans in their racist disdain for the Harijan Coolie Kuta's of the Pakistan military are complaining. Obviously.
If you sell your daughter, mother and the son's of the soil so cheaply why should the American's respect you? Why shouldn't they make even further increasingly impossible demands on you?
If you conduct fake raids in Abbottabad for them, and then let them take the credit, and then stand to attention when they boast and gloat about humiliating Pakistan, why shouldn't they make even further increasingly impossible demands on you?
AND so the relationship is running its course and is turning sour.......with the latest incident of the Pakistani Lobbyists in Washington.....the attacks against Pakistani security posts in the border with Afghanistan, and quite possibly the destabilization situation in Karachi.
Then it only remains for Pakistan to take decisive initiative as argued by this blog for many years to cut the Gordian Nott and seek a significantly better closer relationship with China and India simultaneously.
Take a glass of Lassi, in a quiet room with a view of the night sky and think how Pakistan can possibly work with the USA, which is a country run by 8-9 million Jews, whose forces have just finished destroying Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Yemen and the destabilization of Egypt, Tunisia, Syria and threats against Iran.......how does Pak--i--stan work with a country like that......just think??? Something can't be right.

Mullen: US-Pakistan Military Ties at ‘Crossroads’
No Clear 'Path to Progress' Going Forward
In what is said to be his last press briefing before his retirement, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Michael Mullen confirmed that US-Pakistan military ties are at a “very difficult” crossroads.
At the same time, Mullen insisted, he doesn’t think “we are close to severing” the military-to-military ties between those two nations, even though the US has revoked hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to Pakistan’s military.
Indeed that is just the latest in a string of moves that have raised tensions between the two militaries, including unilateral US and NATO raids from Afghanistan and repeated angry condemnations of the military and its spy agency by top US officials.
Pakistan, for its part, seems to be courting China as a replacement source of military aid, and with the US Congress looking to make future aid conditional on starting more costly wars in its tribal area, Pakistan may have decided the price of American aid is simply too high.
