Turkey conned by Washington over Syria issue: American author

 By Presstv.com
An American author and historian says the Turkish leaders have been “conned” by Washington to get involved in the turmoil in neighboring Syria, Press TV reports.

“Turkey has obviously been conned, they have been manipulated, the ambition and the vanity of (Prime Minister Recep Tayyip) Erdogan and (Foreign Minister Ahmet) Davutoglu, it seems to me has been played on systematically by (US President Barack) Obama,” said Webster Griffin Tarpley in an interview with Press TV on Tuesday.

Tarpley also stated that the Incirlik Air Base in the southern Turkish province of Adana serves as a “logistical hub… which is directing… weapons flow” to armed gangs in Syria.

The American author made the comments on the same day when the NBC News reported that nearly two dozen MANPADs (man-portable air-defense systems) have been delivered to the rebels in Syria by Turkey.

On July 22, the Turkish Anadolu Agency reported that Ankara has deployed ground-to-air missiles on its border with Syria.
Tarpley also pointed to the issue of al-Qaeda in the Syrian turmoil and said, “Think of al-Qaeda as the NATO irregular infantry, a guerilla force if you will, that works for NATO and this structure is already existing on the Turkish territory.”

“Al-Qaeda was an integrated part of this from the very beginning and they have been there because they have been brought in by NATO.”

Turkey is Washington’s lead attack dog.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has internal opposition. Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemel Kilicdaroglu calls Turkey “a country in trouble.”

“We do not want our people to pay the price for Western interests. We do not want Turkey to be dragged into the swamp….(W)e do not want war.”

“We were supposed to be the (regional) game-maker.” (Instead) we ended up being played.

We tried to warn them on the consequences of sectarian fighting in Syria. We were expelled for doing so….Turkey does not deserve to be a proxy country.”

Along with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, other Gulf states, Libya, and Jordan, Turkey is that and more. Regional states may get more than they bargained for.

Destroying Syria assures consequences. Perhaps they’re next. Protests rock Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Others hit Egypt, Tunisia, Oman and the United Arab Emirites.
