Musharaf came from Delhi and is NOT a Punjabi, but in order to promote himself he portrayed himself as a tough body building Punjabi nationalist in the Punjab Pakistan military.
It is alleged that he became a Israeli spy recruited during the early 1980's, and then he joined the Deobandi/Wahabi sect within the military to further his career. In the late 1980's to bolster his image as a hard man, who was a Pak Sunni Musssalman he participated in ops against Shia's in Gilgit, along with Arab mercenaries.....in a similar way to what is happening in Syria now.

He with 3 other generals launched the disastrous Kargil War of 1999, which killed 4000 Pakistani Laskars, NLI and some SSG.......without informing the rest of the army, airforce or navy, OR the civilian PM. It is purported he played golf whilst the disastrous war was going on. He did not want peace with India, which the Sharif government was effortlessly and innovatively pursuing. Peace with India would have brought enormous prestige to the Sharif civilian government, and the sure guarantee of completing a full 5 year political term, and the promise for the PML (N) of a second full term. For the conspiring Pakistani generals who besides being multi-millionaires without any MBA's, or any business......the very idea of having stable regular political parties in power was an anathema to the Pakistani military leadership.
9/11 happened, and Osama as directed by the USA came under the care of the Pakistan ISI. Osama died in December 2001 in Pakistan, BUT crucially Musharaf and the Pakistan military continued to support the USA false narrative which stated that 'al-Qaeda' carried out 9/11 by participating in GWoT in the most rigorous way, by the only country in the world, capturing over 700 'al-Qaeda' suspects and handing them over to the Americans, and 5,000--20,000 internal disappearances under the pretext of fighting GWoT......for/with the USA.
Musharaf allowed thousands upon thousands of USA special forces and CIA to roam freely in Pakistan, hunting for 'al-Qaeda', and gave over many military bases in Pakistan to the USA...which subsequently were used as drone bases to kill innocent Pakistanis.
Musharaf, the commando also killed many legitimate peaceful political leaders who he perceived were threats to his power (non-Punjabis).
Musharaf made millions through arms contracts, and exchanged heated arguments with fellow senior officers about worthless, inappropriate arms contracts (Gandhi Dynasty).....but in Failed State Pakistan this did not raise much concern because it was given that those in power and especially the military top brass should and could make money through foreign arms deals.
It is under Musharaf that false Flag sectarian terrorism, and Sunni terrorism significantly increased with the aid of the CIA/ISI in Pakistan creating 35,000 victims...and 300 terrorist reported incidents.
AS A RESULT Pakistan lost $over $70 billion by some estimates as a result of Musharafs policy of aligning with the USA, and fighting the false GWoT war. There was a huge capital flight of about $200 billion, and businessman ceased to invest in such an uncertain climate.
Musharaf the Coolie Gunga Din from Delhi loved gora sahib, and the adulation of gora sahib ONLY (he escaped/retired to London)...especially their media attention, at the severe cost in lives, misery, poverty, instability, internal refugees, sectarian hatred and uncertainty that his rule brought to Pakistan during 1999---2008.
The Americans brought him to power, grew tired of him with his constant media appearances and poor English, and then removed him. The Americans wanted a weaker, more corrupt Pakistani leader who would obey and enforce their writ in Pakistan further.......so they chose Asif Ali Zardari. Mr. 20% with $4 billion in Swiss accounts alone.

death. I also knew her accused killer, Gen. Pervez Musharraf,
making this a very personal case for me.

been a frequent critic in the past of Benazir and her

to the embattled leader at a time when she was down and out in
exile. Some of my readers in Pakistan accused me of being

Interestingly, Benazir and I were in London with her son Bilawal
shortly before her ill-fated return to Pakistan. I asked her
about the assassination of another Pakistani leader I’d known
well and admired, President Zia ul-Haq. She dismissed my
question with scorn (Zia had hanged her father, Zulfiqar Ali
Bhutto), and said “we’ll never know who killed him – but who
cares? He’s dead and gone.”

behest of Washington, Musharraf had ordered the deaths of many
tribal and religious militants. He had too eagerly allowed the
US military to occupy parts of his country and involve it in the
Afghan conflict. But it’s difficult to imagine that Mush ordered
the killing of the wildly popular Bhutto when an assassination
could easily have failed and backfired. Such a plot would have
exposed him to the anger of his patron, the United States, which
had been promoting a Bhutto-Musharraf diumverate.

Though I
don’t see Musharraf guilty of murder, he seems open to charges
of treason for overthrowing the government of Nawaz Sharif and
opening Pakistan to foreign domination. However, Musharraf’s
cronies and supporters in Punjab should fall under suspicion, as
Benazir asserted. The idea that she was killed by tribal
militants from Waziristan lacks credibility.

A UN
investigation found Benazir’s murder could have been prevented

had ordered the arrest and beating of senior judges who are now
influencing his case. So Pakistan’s judiciary, never renowned
for jurisprudence, can rightly be accused of bias.

Even so,
Musharraf has a lot to pay for, including the killing of the
most prominent Baluchi tribal chief. The US drone campaign that
now ravages Pakistan was approved by him. Pakistan’s fierce
generals are outraged by the trial of one of their own, but this
time they should allow what passes for justice in Pakistan to
take its course. That would be a final gift from Benazir..
