To play in the premier league, India must focus on economic growth

WASHINGTON: For any nation that has major power ambitions in today’s highly complex world, its foreign policy must, to start with, be structured on a dynamic worldview resting on a realistic appreciation of evolving relations among global powers; and, second, be steered by political, not bureaucratic, hands. Do India’s global strategy and policy direction meet the two criteria?

If we look at India’s dealings in its regional backyard, as well as in nurturing relations bilaterally with certain global powers, the answer would be a cautious yes. When it comes to stances and pronouncements in the global arena, however, India seems to be nurturing a hangover from Cold War era indulgences of the 20th century when India’s approach to the world was based on the wisdom of bygone times.

Regionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given political leadership in improving relations with all South Asian nations with the exception of Pakistan. He seems to have a view of regional relations that may partially be to keep Pakistan sulking in a corner while India’s ties with other countries in South Asia become firmer. Critics of this approach to Islamabad say New Delhi should extend a hand of friendship and build close economic ties to thus bolster the efforts of the democratically elected government of Nawaz Sharif. 
 .
But it’s easier said than done.

Frankly, Nawaz Sharif has limited capacity to deliver on either friendship or economic ties. It’s Raheel Sharif, the army chief, who has the final say on foreign relations, including trade ties with India. He and his cohort have a view of Indo-Pak relations that doesn’t yet rest on bonhomie.

Bilaterally, India under Modi has done well to intensify the already growing close ties with the United States and in the Asian sphere with Japan and Australia. His frequent flyer miles can yield better bilateral ties with several major players, including some European powers.
.

It is on the global stage, in WTO or climate talks or the UN, that the problem manifests itself. To see the contrast between an India, the regional power that wants bilateral understandings with world powers, and an India that aspires to be a player in the premier league of international relations, look at Modi’s recent visit to the US.
.

On the one hand, he pitched India to Silicon Valley leaders as a terrific digital destination and then in New York squeezed in an hour-long discussion with President Barack Obama and his team on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. On the other, he initiated a meeting of the so-called G-4, or Germany, Japan, Brazil and India, a bunch of me-too nations craving for membership of an exclusionary world club that is unlikely to accept them.

Three questions: One, what are the realistic prospects of the five permanent members agreeing to make any of those G-4 nations a full member of the Security Council? As the G-4’s own statement acknowledged, “No substantial progress had been made since the 2005 World Summit when all the heads of state and government had supported the ‘early reform’ of the Security Council.” At best, the P-5 might agree to any one or two of the G-4 aspirants to be associate permanent members with no veto power.

Which raises question two: Why would India want to become a secondary member, with no serious voting right, of a club dominated by a group of powers who are not willing either to share their authority or to take in a member who may side with one side or the other of the US-Europe-China-Russia divisions within the council?
.

And three: Is India truly ready to take on the role of a world power that will perforce have to take clear stands on global issues and thus move from its age-old let’s-not-take-sides approach?
.

It might be worth asking such questions instead of blindly following the old bureaucratic track of taking high-sounding positions on the global stage.

Germany and Japan have managed to play in the premier league so far without Security Council membership. Why not study how they developed the chutzpah for that to happen? 

Might it be that they seriously concentrated on economic growth to achieve stunning success before they were called to play?

Politics, Netaji Bose and the ‘Ramzade’ version of Hindutva

West Bengal government recently declassified 64 confidential files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and chief minister Mamata Banerjee has gone on record saying Netaji might have survived August 18, 1945, plane crash in Taihoku, Formosa (now Taipei, Taiwan). Before that, the Uttar Pradesh government approved Rs 1.5 crore for a museum in Faizabad to preserve belongings of Gumnami Baba alias Bhagwanji, who many believe was Netaji living incognito disguised as a Sadhu after independence and died on September 16, 1985. The two decisions followed after some personalities, who claim to be Netaji devotees, from different walks of life came together to form a Janata Commission to unravel the mystery surrounding Netaji’s death. Undoubtedly we all want to know whether Netaji survived the plane crash or not. But for me, more important is the question: If alive, what Netaji would have done today?

The question assumes importance because many including some in the Janata Commission accuse successive Congress governments after independence of covering up Netaji’s death. The accusations, as assessed by my close friend Deepak Kabir, have not only strengthened conspiracy theories surrounding Netaji’s death, but have also manufactured an atmosphere, which, on one hand attacks Jawaharlal Nehru and his policies and on the other paints a picture of Netaji as ‘a Hindu sadhu who lived in Ayodyha’. And, I agree with Deepak because I can see Sangh Parivar, which includes Hindu mahasabha, covertly trying to appropriate Netaji, while its political arm Modi sarkar indulging in selective leakages of classified documents to demonize Nehru.

If Nehru did wrong with Netaji, it should be exposed. Similarly, it should be probed whether Gumnami Baba was actually Netaji or not – If yes, why he chose to live incognito and if no, who are behind the conspiracy theory and if there is any connection between the Gumnami Baba story and placing of idols in Babri mosque for creating Ramjanambhoomi controversy. But under no circumstances, Netaji should be allowed to be used to serve vested interest of the ideology which is exactly opposite of what the great leader followed all his life. I am sure that had Netaji been alive, the same Sangh Parivar would have called him ‘sikular’ and targeted him for marrying a woman of foreign origin. I am also sure, had Netaji been alive, he would have fought against corrupt Congress regimes we saw after independence. And, I am doubly sure that had Netaji been alive today, he would have waged a war against the divisive communal ideology, which ironically is ruling the country at present, responsible for assassination of Gandhi, whom he called the father of the nation.

From VD Savarkar to LK Advani and now Modi Sarkar, the Sangh Parivar has been relentlessly trying to paint Netaji as an Hindutva icon after Independence. They have succeeded up to some extent because of ignorance of the Indian people who are swayed by propaganda and do not devote time in reading and understanding Netaji’s life and writings. The mainstream media has also become a tool in the hands of those in power. After reading a little bit of his writing, I have come to the conclusion that Netaji doesn’t fit into Sangh Parivar’s definition of ‘Ramzade’. Contrary to the Sangh Parivar’s regressive and faulty interpretation of `Hindutva’ and ‘Bhartiya Sanskriti’, Netaji in his autobiography “An Indian Pilgrim” has declared that he believes in eclectic version of Hinduism and composite culture of India. He has made it clear that unlike British rulers who invaded India only to plunder its resources, the Muslim invaders settled and contributed in its development.

As early as January 1928, Netaji had rejected the idea of Hindu state as suggested by BS Moonje, mentor of RSS founder KB Hedgewar. And even before that in 1924-25, as chief executive officer of Calcutta Municipal Corporation, Netaji implemented reservation for Muslims in jobs. As Congress president in 1938-39, he banned dual membership, ie, no member of Hindu Mahasabha or Muslim League could become a member of an elective committee of the Congress. In 1940, he tried to bring Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim league together at a common platform and persuaded them to leave their communal agenda, but both ditched him. He came to the conclusion that these communal forces, if required, should be crushed with force. Later, Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League formed coalition governments in 1942 in Bengal, Sind and North Western Frontier Province and supported British rulers, when Congress had launched Quit India movement inside the country and Netaji was fighting from outside with his Indian National Army (INA).

INA anthem and songs

Netaji was the first head of the independent Indian government, although it was in exile. The way he conducted affairs of INA and his government provide us a glimpse of how he would have ruled India, if elected to power, after British left in 1947. He brought all castes, communities and faith together without discrimination in the INA government. He named INA brigades after Nehru and Gandhi. He got Bengali version of Jan Gan Man written by Guru Rabindranath Tagore translated into Hindi and made it the national anthem. The same song was adopted as national anthem by free India. Sangh Parivar claims that Tagore wrote it to praise British emperor in 1911. If the claim was true, Netaji would have never adopted it. Listen carefully the two famous songs of INA ‘Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja’ (quick march of INA and now of Indian army) and `Hum Dilli Dilli Jayenge’. First line of the third stanza of `Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja’ is `Teri Himmat Badhti Rahe, Khuda Teri Sunta Rahe’. And, the fourth line of the fourth stanza of `Hum Dilli Dilli Jayenge’ is `Khudaa Bhi Humaaraa Saathi Hai’ . Both have word `Khuda’, which in Persian means God. I am sure Sangh Parivar would dub this as Muslim appeasement but the fact is for Netaji `God called by any name was God’.

During 1945-46 INA Red Fort trial of Netaji’s lieutenants Prem Kumar Sahgal, Shah Nawaz Khan, and Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon (A Hindu, Muslim and Sikh), the popular slogan in the country was “Lal kile se aayee awaz, Sahgal-Dhillon-Shah Nawaz, teenon ki ho umar daraz”. This reflects how Netaji inspired people to unite keeping aside their differences.

Gandhi, who did not agree with the idea of armed struggle, said “Even if INA failed in its immediate objective, it achieved a lot. The greatest among these was to gather together, under one banner, men from all religious and races of India and to infuse into them the spirit of solidarity and oneness to the utter exclusion of all communal or parochial sentiment. It is an example we should all emulate. If they did this under the glamour and romance to fighting, it was not much. It must persist in peace. The greatest and the lasting act of Netaji was that he abolished all distinctions of caste and class. He was Indian first and last.

What more, he fired all under him with the same zeal so that they forget in his presence all distinctions and acted as one man. The greatest lesson that we can draw from Netaji’s life is the way in which he infused the spirit of unity into his men, so that they could rise above all religious and provincial barriers and shed together their blood for the common cause.” And, Nehru said “The communal problem that troubles us so much was solved by 0the INA and its great leader Subhas Chadra Bose. Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs lived together as Indians, and struggled unitedly for the common cause.”

In his autobiography Netaji has written: “…I am inclined, however, to think that in proportion to their numbers, and considering India as a whole, the Muslims have never ceased to play an important role in the public life of the country, whether before or under British rule -— and that the distinction between Hindu and Muslim of which we hear so much nowadays is largely an artificial creation, a kind of Catholic—Protestant controversy in Ireland, in which our present-day rulers (British) have had a hand. History will bear me out when I say that it is a misnomer to talk of Muslim rule when describing the political order in India prior to the advent of the British. Whether we talk of the Moghul Emperors at Delhi, or of the Muslim Kings of Bengal, we shall find that in either ease the administration was run by Hindus and Muslims together, many of the prominent Cabinet Ministers and Generals being Hindus. Further, the consolidation of the Moghul Empire in India was effected with the help of Hindu commanders-in—chief. The commander-in-chief of Nawab Siraj-ud-Daullah, whom the British fought at Plassey in 1757 and defeated, was a Hindu, and the rebellion of 1857 against the British, in which Hindus and Moslems were found side by side, was fought under the flag of a Muslim, Bahadur Shah. Be that as it may, it is a fact so far as Bengal is concerned, whatever the causes may be, most of the prominent personalities that arose soon after the British conquest were Hindus. The most outstanding of them was Raja Ram Mohun Roy (1772-1833) who founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1828. The dawn of the 19th century saw a new awakening in the land. This awakening was cultural and religious in character and the Brahmo Samaj was its spearhead. It could be likened to a combination of the Renaissance and Reformation. One aspect of it was national and conservative —— standing for a revival of lndia’s culture and a reform of India’s religions. The other aspect of it was cosmopolitan and eclectic — seeking to assimilate what was good and useful in other cultures and religions. Ram Mohon was the visible embodiment of the new awakening and the herald of a new era in India’s history. His mantle fell successively on ‘Maharshi’ Devendra Nath Tagore (1818-1905), father of the poet Rabindra Nath Tagore, and Brahmanand Keshav Chandra Sen (1838-1884) and the influence of the Brahmo Samaj grew from day to day….”

In the second part of his autobiography, the Indian struggle, he has written: “…With the advent of the Mohammedans, a new synthesis was gradually worked out. Though they did not accept the religion of the Hindus, they made India their home and shared in the common social life of the people — their joys and their Sorrows. Through mutual co-operation, a new art and a new culture was evolved which was different from the old but which nevertheless was distinctly Indian. In architecture, painting, music — new creations were made which represented the happy blending of the two streams of culture. Moreover, the administration of the Mohammedan rulers left untouched the daily life of the people and did not interfere with local self-government based on the old system of village communities. With British rule, however, there came a new religion, a new culture and a new civilisation which did not want to blend with the old but desired to dominate the country completely. The British people, unlike the invaders of old, did not make India their home. They regarded themselves as birds of passage and looked upon India as the source of raw materials and as the market for finished goods. Moreover, they endeavoured to imitate the autocracy of the Mohammedan rulers without following their wise policy of complete non-interference in local affairs. The result of this was that the Indian people began to feel for the first time in their history that they were being dominated culturally, politically and economically by a people who were quite alien to them and with whom they had nothing whatsoever in common. Hence the magnitude of the revolt against the British domination of India.

About Mughal ruler Akbar

We all know the views of Sangh Parivar including BJP about Mughal emperor Akbar. Here is what Netaji has written about Akbar: “…During the sixteenth and seventeenth century under the rule of the Moghul emperors, India once again reached the pinnacle of progress and prosperity. The greatest of them was Akbar, who ruled in the latter half of the sixteenth century. The great merit of Akbar was not only the political unification of the country, but what was perhaps more important, the working out of a new cultural synthesis — in order to reconcile the new stream of culture with the old — and evolve a new culture. The state machinery which he built up was also based on the whole-hearted co-operation of the Hindu and Mohammedan communities.

“…Under the Mohammedan rulers, though there was unbridled autocracy, the Central Government rarely interfered in provincial or local affairs. The governor of a ‘Suba’ or a province was of course appointed by the Emperor, but as long as revenue was regularly sent into the imperial coffers, the provincial administration was not interfered with in any way. Though occasionally a fanatical ruler would attempt proselytisation, on the whole the people enjoyed complete freedom in religious, cultural and social affairs, no matter who occupied the throne at Delhi. British historians are without exception guilty of overlooking this fact and when they loosely talk of despotism to which orientals are accustomed, they forget that behind this cloak of despotism, the people enjoyed a large measure of real liberty, which they have been denied under British rule. Both before and after the Aryan conquest of India, autonomous village institutions have been a consistent feature of the public life of India. This is true as much of the Aryan kingdoms of the north of the Tamil kingdoms of the south. But under British rule these institutions have been destroyed and the long arm of the bureaucracy stretches into the remotest villages. There is not one square foot of land where the people feel that they are free to manage their own affairs….”

Netaji’s faith and philosophy of life

I autobiography Netaji has written that after studying various philosophies and on the basis of his personal experience, he has come to the conclusion that the Absolute Reality is Love and Truth: “…My own view is that most of the conceptions of reality are true, though partially, and the main question is which conception represents the maximum truth. For me, the essential nature of reality is LOVE. LOVE is the essence of the Universe and is the essential principle in human life. I admit that this conception also is imperfect – for I do not know today what reality is in itself and I cannot lay claim to knowing the Absolute today – even if it be within the ultimate reach of human knowledge or experience. Nevertheless, with all its imperfection, for me this theory represents the maximum truth and is the nearest approach to Absolute Truth. I may be asked how I come to the conclusion that the essential nature of reality is LOVE. I am afraid my epistemology is not quite orthodox. I have come to this conclusion partly from a rational study of life in all aspects – partly from intuition and partly from pragmatic considerations. I see all around me the play of love; I perceive within me the same instinct; I feel that I must love in order to fulfil myself and I need love as the basic principle on which to reconstruct life. A plurality of considerations drives me to one and the same conclusion….The Reality is Spirit, the essence of which is Love, gradually unfolding itself in an eternal play of conflicting forces and their solutions.”

 As Takfiri terrorists are still at large in Syria, Russian warplanes have come to help the war-stricken country out of the crisis upon a request from President Bashar al-Assad.

Deployed in an airbase in Syria’s coastal province of Latakia, Russian warplanes started their anti-terror campaign on Wednesday and are still carrying out “precision strikes” against Daesh and other terrorist groups, targeting their bases and arsenals in the militant-held regions.
.
According to the Russian RT television network, there are more than 50 Russian fighter jets and choppers currently operating in Syria, helping the Syrian government clearing the country from terrorists.
.
The following photos and videos are RT’s exclusive close-ups of Russian fighter jets, and show them resting inside the base, taking off, flying, or landing.

The WESTERN-sponsored conflict in Syria, which started in March 2011, has reportedly claimed some 250,000 lives up until now.

The United Nations says 12.2 million people, including more than 5.6 million children, remain in need of humanitarian assistance in the Arab country. The WESTERN-sponsored militancy has also displaced some 11 million people -- about half the country's pre-war population.

Russian airstrikes aim to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity: Putin

 Russian President Vladimir Putin says one of the key objectives of Moscow’s anti-terror airstrikes in Syria is to preserve the Arab country’s territorial integrity.

Russia’s air support “for offensive operations of the Syrian army also pursues a main goal of maintaining territorial integrity of this country," Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov quoted him as saying during a Friday meeting with French President Francois Hollande in Paris, the Interfax news agency reported.
.
Putin told Hollande that Russian bombers are carrying out their operation " in strict compliance with the international law" and "at the request of the Syrian leadership," Peskov stated.

Hollande, for his part, told Putin that the airstrikes must be limited to attacking the Daesh terrorist group, not other terrorists operating in Syria, which the West labels them as “moderate rebels.”

"What I told Mr. Putin is that the strikes must concern Daesh, and only Daesh," Hollande told reporters after the meeting.
.
Putin later discussed the crisis in Syria in a separate Friday meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
.
The leaders “said very clearly that Daesh was the enemy that we needed to fight," Merkel told reporters after the talks.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. Syrian forces have since been battling terrorists on different fronts throughout the country.

Moscow began its military campaign against terrorists on September 30 upon a request from the Damascus government, shortly after the upper house of the Russian parliament gave Putin the mandate to use military force in Syria.

On Friday, Russian media quoted Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov as saying that the country’s air force carried out six precision strikes against Daesh positions in Syria.

“Sukhoi Su-25 attack planes have fully destroyed a large landmine and improvised explosive device production facility, which was disguised as a gas container plant, in the area of Maaret-al-Numan, Idlib province,” he said.
.
According to the Russian official, a nearby terrorist base was dismantled in the attack. Russian air force jets also targeted an underground militant command post in Hama province.

'Nonsense pseudo-sensations'

The Russian raids have drawn criticism from Western governments and their allies in the Middle East, which have been supporting the militants operating in the region.

The United States, Britain, France, Germany, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey released a joint statement on Friday, criticizing the Russian airstrikes that they said had not targeted Daesh positions.
.
In response, Russia's Defense Ministry said mainstream media reports about Moscow’s operation in Syria were "total nonsense."

"These pseudo-sensations are total nonsense and haven't enough factual basis to name or even discuss in detail. I call your attention to the fact that the information provocations emerging today were prepared hastily before the beginning of the operation," said Konashenkov.

Following the separate Friday meetings, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko joined the presidents of Russia, France and Germany for about five hours of talks on the crisis in eastern Ukraine.

The four leaders agreed to postpone local elections in Ukraine to make sure that they meet international standards.

Putin told the other leaders that the case of local elections in Ukraine’s east will cause problems if considered separately from the issue of political reforms in Ukraine, according to his spokesman.

During February negotiations in the Belarusian capital Minsk, the leaders of Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine, known as the Normandy Four or the Normandy Quartet, agreed on the withdrawal of heavy weapons from Ukraine’s frontlines and a ceasefire, which officially went into effect in mid-February. The warring sides, however, have continued to engage in sporadic clashes.

The Donbass region in eastern Ukraine, comprising of the two mainly Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, has been the scene of deadly clashes between pro-Russia forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev’s military operation started in April 2014 in a bid to crush pro-Russia protests there.

The crisis has so far left some 8,000 people dead and 18,000 others injured, according to the United Nations.(Other reports say 50,000 dead....30,000 injured and 2-3 million internal and external refugees)

Russian Airstrikes Hit Our “Moderate” Terrorists in Syria so They Threaten More Terrorism

The Russian defense ministry has released some video of their first strikes against terrorist targets in Syria today. The strikes took place outside of Homs.

These strikes came at the request of the country’s President, Bashar al-Assad after US airstrikes in the country appear to have been targeting civilian infrastructure, not “ISIS” You will notice that there are no long parades of guys in fake beards riding in Helix trucks waving black “ISIS” flags. My guess is, we’ve seen the last of those.





The Russians warned the US and other Coalition of the Willing partners to back off of Syrian airspace right before this morning’s attacks. They did. Russia then went in and hit targets which they claim are “ISIS”, but everyone knows, they are really our moderate terrorists like the Free Syrian Army, al Nusra and other Wahhabist mercenaries.

Areas of the province of Homs struck by the Russians are controlled by an array of rebel groups including several operating under the banner of the “Free Syrian Army,” activists, locals and rebels said. None of the sources named Islamic State as one of the groups operating in the areas hit on Wednesday. Assad views all the forces opposing him in the civil war as terrorist groups (that’s because they are all terrorist groups)…
… Iyad Shamse, leader of an FSA Syrian rebel group, the Asala and Tanmieh Front, told Reuters: “There is no Islamic State in this area. The Russians are applying great pressure on the revolution. This will strengthen terrorism, everyone will head towards extremism. Any support for Assad in this way is strengthening terrorism.” Reuters

As you can see, the terrorists themselves are threatening still more terrorism if the Russians continue to assist the people of Syria by defending them from the terrorists.

John Kerry said they would have “grave concerns” if Russia targeted our regime change unconventional warriors fighting their terrorist campaign in Syria. He went on to say ISIS, “cannot be defeated as long as Bashar al-Assad remains president of Syria.”

That’s right. Because, you can’t target a hearts and minds fabrication with smart bombs. Apparently you CAN target our Wahhabist mercenaries though, and thus, Sec. Kerry’s “grave concerns” are justified.

I can promise you this… the days of WESTERN forces putting on fake beards and driving around Helix trucks in long photo-op parades are LOOOOONG gone.

The complicit US media is in a frenzy. They can’t really screech about Russia bombing targets in Syria because they know that’s who WE are supposed to be targeting. And they can’t scream about Russia “invading” a country, because they were invited to help out while President Peace Prize was not.

Plus, try as they might to present Russia’s targeting of the “peaceful moderate terrorists” hired by Barack as a bad thing, ultimately, all they are left with as far as an argument goes is saying the Russians are deliberately defending the government of Assad.

Well, they think we forget but… the United States never gave authorization to use military force in pursuit of forcing a regime change in Syria.

Obama got authorization to fight “ISIS”… or terrorists supposedly in Syria to remove Assad.

It’s a sticky situation for the propagandists of the MSM.

I just watched some talking heads on MSNBC babbling back and forth about the Defense Secretary’s recent statements on the subject. “They’re bombing the terrorists, the moderates, supposed to be “ISIS”, and we bomb “ISIS”, but we don’t want them to bomb “ISIS”, and Obama’s moderates… and Assad has to go, but there is no authorization… but Russia evil… bin Laden?”
 

Meanwhile, as is evidenced by the statement from that Free Syrian Army terrorist, looks like our moderate “rebels” are about to hit the road and there doesn’t seem to be much President Peace Prize can do about it.

Sure, they can threaten more terrorism targeting soft targets of Syrian civilian centers, but in the end, they know they were losing to Syrian forces alone before the West started bombing Assad’s forces. Now, with the Russians flying sorties in the areas, the Westerners are probably already hiding under their mattresses back in Europe somewhere and the US are sitting on the sidelines safely on a carrier somewhere watching it all unfold.

They don’t dare pull off another chemical weapons attack knowing full well the Russians would be the ones investigating where that Sarin gas came from this time.

And they certainly aren’t going to target Russian pilots.

Here’s the irony and the brilliance of Putin’s gambit:

Since we created the mythology of “ISIS” and now we can’t uncreate it, Russia has the perfect opportunity to jump on our bandwagon and go after our “moderate” terrorists. Who is too say the terrorists they killed today weren’t “ISIS”? The terrorists? They might just as well be “ISIS” saying that and you can’t take their word for it, after all, they’re terrorists. And we aren’t supposed to like terrorists, are we?

And as soon as the Russians and Syrians start picking through the debris and they start finding terrorist-type bombs and chemical weapons, what are the Mockingbirds going to do in the US press corps?

And God forbid they find that stuff and paychecks from the National Endowment for Democracy.

Yes, the masters of the universe have been hung by their own petards on this one.

They created the slippery evil-doers known as “ISIS” and now they can’t unmake them as Russia uses “ISIS” as cover to go into Syria and bomb the crap out of our “moderate” terrorists.

No wonder Obama refused Russia’s help in fighting the terrorists.

The distance between Caucasus........Armenia and Syria is about 400 km. Chechnya Dagestan etc are to the immediate North.

5,000--7000 Russian Muslims are fighting for ISIS.....Funneled, armed, trained, financed by NATO Turkey....puffed up like a croaking frog by their Western masters....Who used them before, against Russia.

Syria is Russia's only Arab ally, and a friend for 57 years since 1958.

Russia has military bases in Syria since before many years.

The Jewish lobby in Moscow lobbied to prevent Russian support for Syria....and this led to a period of bizarre, obtuse semantics from Lavrov...and even Putin.(Proposing a Russian initiative where Assad would step down, and al-Qaeda would take over in Damascus 2012)

But four years of fighting has made things much more clear for Russia.......ISIS can march against Damascus and Baghdad......ISIS can also march against Moscow.

Events in Ukraine from 2014 also helped Russia think more LOGICALLY and strategically.....to the point now, Russian military personnel are fighting in Syria, BUT not Ukraine.

Russia will destroy ISIS.

Though never made any sense how an irregular volunteer force, very lightly armed, trained of 10,000? could pin down two militaries of two sovereign countries, equipped with air-forces.......AND heavy equipment. This is not 500 BC. Heavy modern military equipment matter in flat desert like terrain.

Syria--350,000 armed forces not including the state militia....and Hezbollah, Pasdaran and Russian experts.

Iraq--200,000 including Pasdaran, and Shia militia's.

There's no point talking about the Western elements due to their dubious shady backgrounds.

US Condemns Move, Syria Confirms They Asked Russia for Help

Russian warplanes have begun their first airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria, with President Putin saying he is concerned about the continued ISIS takeover of the region, and fear that ISIS forces might threaten European countries, including Russia, if they weren’t stopped.

A statement from the Syrian state media says President Bashar al-Assad formally requested help from Russia in the ongoing civil war, and that the airstrikes began in response to that. US officials slammed the move, saying Assad has to be removed from power.

The first Russian strikes targeted western Homs Province, with the Russian Defense Ministry saying they believe the positions hit belong to ISIS. Another rebel faction, however, claimed they were the ones that were hit, and also claimed Russia deliberately targeted civilians in the area.
.
According to US officials, Russia gave them an hour’s notice on the airstrikes, and advised them to remove US and coalition warplanes from Syrian airspace during the bombing run. There was no confirmation, however, if the US actually did this.
