However given that the Taliban is largely an ethnic based group representing Pashtuns who have traditionally dominated Afghanistan for 300 years, the Taliban provides aggrieved young Pashtun men a genuine channel through which they can vent their anger at the foreign occupation of their homeland, Afghanistan.

On the other hand since the Taliban is a "Controlled Opposition" it must play its part in the theater of Afghanistan set by the CIA......and that means attacking Kabul now and then to remind the everybody what a noble role the USA is playing on behalf of the world in that wretched country......so manipulated for 30 odd years by the CIA/ISI into war and destruction.

The recent Taliban attack around the country was probably a false flag attack. If it was a genuine nationalist attack by true local liberators, then they would NOT have attacked Russian and German targets.......and other civilian targets, but instead would have focused on the USA, the main actor in this tragedy.

Geraldo Rivera trying to steer the conversation in Afghanistan, calls Taliban a ‘jerk-off’

If one man ever embodied all that is wrong with the mainstream media’s failing propaganda outlets, it’s Geraldo Rivera.

Presently, he’s masquerading as a journalist in Afghanistan, earning his salary as the media’s ultimate weapon of mass distraction.

Following yesterday’s Taliban offensive where a number of Afghanistan’s urban areas were hit in a coordinated paramilitary attack, FOX News aired its tenuous program entitled “Geraldo at Large”.

The tough-talking embedded reporter Rivera admitted that he didn’t see any of the action because (he claimed) he was helplessly locked inside the US embassy when the Taliban offensive took place.

When the smoke finally cleared, and it was safe to come out, FOX’s brave journalist emerged, this time on camera with an Afghan translator who was allegedly phoning a Taliban fighter for some post-attack commentary.

This is a spook media stunt

Rivera started in with, “Ask him how it feels to get his ass kicked…”

When the Taliban on the phone replied, Geraldo promptly interrupted him, ironically telling his FOX viewers not to listen because, “… it’s propaganda”.

A model of journalistic integrity, Geraldo finished off his segment with gusto by pretending to shout-down the Taliban through the phone, effectively calling them out from a safe distance:

”You jerk-off… what did you win?!”

“You killed no Americans…”

After being dumped by ABC and NBC, Rivera eventually landed his current position at the MSM’s dying flagship FOX News.

Rivera’s reporting in Afghanistan has since reached new lows from yesterday’s Taliban outburst – but not as low as previous reporting where he worked as a vacant apologist for the heroin trade in Central Asia.

Pentagon Spokesman Captain John Kirby also went on to write off the attack, saying, ”I don’t believe they succeeded.”

At no point during FOX and other US television mainstream media reporting on yesterday’s coordinated nation-wide Taliban attack did TV news reporters mention the US military slaughter of 18 innocent Afghan villagers that took place in Kandahar only a few short weeks ago. It was because of this very massacre that the Taliban mounted their latest ‘Spring Offensive’.

This is a prime example of how the US media is able to erase the past, training their viewers not to think in terms of cause and effect, but only to see events as they are presented on the TV news conveyor belt managed by media cartel members FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS, and CNN.

FOX pundits continued to shape their audience’s newly scripted reality in Afghanistan explaining, “This attack bares all the halmarks of the Haqqani Network“. Sound familiar? “Bares all the hallmarks of… (fill in the blanks).

The U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, Ryan Crocker, also repeated the Pentagon’s latest talking point, explaining in an interview with CNN’s ‘‘State of the Union” program, that he also believed the attacks were carried out by the evil Haqqani.

As the alleged Taliban faction, labeled as the “Haqqani”, are supposedly based in Pakistan, the Pentagon’s new terror network allows the Washington to ramp-up their tough talk with Pakistan, as well as step-up drone attacks over the Afghan border.

Up to 20 US Troops Behind Kandahar Bloodbath – Afghan Probe

An Afghan parliamentary investigation team has implicated up to 20 US troops in the massacre of 16 civilians in Kandahar early on Sunday morning. It contradicts NATO's account that insists one rogue soldier was behind the slaughter.

The team of Afghan lawmakers has spent two days collating reports from witnesses, survivors and inhabitants of the villages where the tragedy took place.

“We are convinced that one soldier cannot kill so many people in two villages within one hour at the same time, and the 16 civilians, most of them children and women, have been killed by the two groups,” investigator Hamizai Lali told Afghan News.

Lali also said their investigations led them to believe 15 to 20 US soldiers had been involved in the killings. He appealed to the international community to ensure that the responsible parties were brought to justice, stressing the Afghan parliament would not rest until the killers were prosecuted.

"If the international community does not play its role in punishing the perpetrators, the Wolesi Jirga [parliament] would declare foreign troops as occupying forces,” he said.


The head of the Afghan parliamentary investigation, Sayed Ishaq Gillani, told the BBC that witnesses report seeing helicopters dropping chaff during the attack, a measure used to hide targets from ground attack. Gillani added that locals suspect the massacre was revenge for attacks carried out last week on US forces that left several injured.


In response to the massacre Afghan PM Hamid Karzai called for US troops to quit Afghan villages and confine themselves to their military bases across the country. Furthermore, the Taliban announced that talks with US forces would be suspended.


Meanwhile the US military has detained one soldier in connection with the massacre and transferred him to Kuwait amid outcry for a public trial in Afghanistan. Currently, the soldier is being flown to Kansas base, AFP reported.

US authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the motives behind the attack, but maintain that the soldier’s trial must be dealt with by the US legal system.

It is believed that the soldier may have had alcohol problems and been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Afghan parliamentary mission investigating the recent massacre of 16 civilians by US forces in Afghanistan says two women were raped during the deadly incident, Press TV reports.

Two members of the fact-finding mission, Hamidzi Lali and Shakiba Hashemi, told the general meeting of Afghanistan’s parliament on Saturday that the American troopers raped two Afghan women before starting the massacre.

They said between 15 to 20 US soldiers were involved in the carnage.

This is while Washington claims that the 38-year-old Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, who has just arrived in the US, was the only American military personnel responsible for the massacre.

Earlier on Friday, Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai criticized the United States for not cooperating with the Afghan fact-finding team and said the killing of civilians by foreign forces in Afghanistan “has been going on for too long.”

On March 11, a group of US soldiers went from house to house in three villages in Kandahar’s Panjwaii district and gunned down Afghan civilians inside their homes, killing at least 16 people -- mostly women and children -- and injuring several others.

11 March 2012 murders in Kandahar. Back in 2010, four US soldiers killed unarmed civilians in this part of Kandahar. They were found gulty of forming a "kill team" that murdered Afghan civilians for sport.

On 11 March 2012, a GROUP of American soldiers murdered 16 civilians, including nine children, in southern Kandahar province in Afghanistan.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai described the Kandahar attack as "intentional murders".

"They (Americans) poured chemicals over their dead bodies and burned them," Haji Samad told Reuters.

Neighbors said they awoke to gunfire from American soldiers, whom they described as laughing.

Eric Margolis the Canadian journalist suggests prickly over sensitive Pashtuns who have an ancient tribal code of honor as some kind of explanation for the current protests in Afghanistan, and the occasional fragging.

Fragging happens in ALL armies. It happened in Vietnam during 1968--75, especially, when dissatisfaction with the war by American servicemen turned to internal indiscipline problems, in far greater numbers then the current ones by Afghans.

It happened on a huge scale in the Soviet military between 1941-45, in reverse...where literally millions of Soviet soldiers were killed by NKVD officers for disobeying orders, or retreating in the face of the enemy.

In the annals of military history there is nothing extraordinary about what Afghan soldiers do to their Western trainers every now and then given the 11 year duration of the conflict, the nature of Afghan society, and the nature of the foreign occupation of Afghanistan.

Clearly a certain number of Afghans are not happy.

But mean, uncharitable spurious explanations from the Western Jewish media will not do.

Pashtuns have been displaced as the dominant group in the country, even though they represent 40-55% of the population, and have ruled it for over 1000 years. Tajiks, and Uzbek minorities, armed and trained by NATO roam freely in Pashtun areas, providing backup help for the USA/NATO occupation.

The law and order situation in the country is very poor, and many warlords do not recognize the authority of Kabul.

The country after 11 years of bad American occupation is still failed state number 9 from the bottom.

The CIA which drives American policy in the country has opted for narco- Mafia figures, as the main base for support for their policies and rule in Afghanistan.

Child Hunger in Afghanistan Among Worst in the World

Thanks to the ruthless decade-long war, children in Afghanistan suffer one of the highest levels of chronic malnutrition in the world, according to a report released Monday by the World Bank and the government.

More than half of Afghan children under the age of five go hungry, the report said, despite billions of dollars in aid that has come into the country over the years.

One of the reasons the aid hasn’t helped is because much of it is wasted or goes through the hands of corrupt Afghan officials. Another reason, mentioned by the report, is because “foreign assistance has disproportionally gone to the provinces where concentration of troops and fighting has been heaviest,” said Josephine Bassinette of the World Bank. ”But the analysis in this report shows that poverty and food insecurity rates are actually higher in the more peaceful provinces,” she said.

Starvation of children is only one measure of the savage, unnecessary U.S. war in Afghanistan. Last month, Amnesty International found that an average of four hundred people are displaced in every day in Afghanistan, bringing the total displaced population to approximately 500,000.

Amnesty Afghanistan researcher Horia Mosadiq said: “Thousands of people are finding themselves living in freezing, cramped conditions and on the brink of starvation, while the Afghan government is not only looking the other way but even preventing help from reaching them.”

The U.S. continues to make no progress in its failed effort to stabilize Afghanistan and build a reliable client state. Rates of violence continue to hit record highs and civilian casualties have risen for every 6 month period since the surge in 2009.

Shock, incomprehension, fury. Americans are feeling these raw emotions as news keeps coming in of more attacks by Afghan government soldiers and officials on US and NATO troops. Six US troops were killed last week as a result of protests across Afghanistan following the burning of the Holy Quran by incredibly dim-witted American soldiers.

“Aren’t they supposed to be our allies? We are over there to save them! What outrageous ingratitude,” ask angry, confused Americans.

Angry Britons asked the same questions in 1857 when “sepoys,” individual mercenary soldiers of Britain’s Imperial Indian Army, then entire units rebelled and began attacking British military garrisons and their families. British history calls it the “Indian Mutiny.” Indians call it the “Great Rebellion” marking India’s first striving for freedom from the British Raj and the Indian vassal princes who so dutifully served it.

Britons were outraged by the “perfidy” and “treachery” of their Indian sepoys who were assumed to be totally loyal because they were fighting for the king’s shilling. Victorian Britain reeled from accounts of frightful massacres of Britons at places like Lucknow, Cawnpore, Delhi, and Calcutta’s infamous “black hole.”

British forces in India, backed by loyal native units, mercilessly crushed the Indian rebels. Rebel ringleaders were tied to the mouths of cannon and blown to bits, or hanged en masse.

Today’s Afghanistan recalls Imperial India. Forces of the US-installed Kabul government, numbering about 310,000 men, are composed of Tajiks and Uzbeks from the north, some Shia Hazaras, and a hodgepodge of rogue Pashtun and mercenary groups. Ethnic Tajiks and Uzbeks served the Soviets when they occupied Afghanistan as well as the puppet Afghan Communist Party.

Today, as then, Tajiks and Uzbeks form the core of government armed forces and secret police. They are the blood enemies of the majority Pashtun, who fill the ranks of Taleban and its allies in Afghanistan and neighbouring Pakistan.

But half the Afghan armed forces and police serve only to support their families. The Afghan economy under NATO’s rule is now so bad that even in Kabul, thousands are starving or dying from intense cold. Half of Afghans are unemployed and must seek work from the US-financed government.

But loyal they are not. While covering the 1980’s jihad against Soviet occupation, I saw everywhere that soldiers and officials supposedly loyal to the Communist Najibullah regime in Kabul kept in constant touch with the anti-Soviet mujahidin and reported all Soviet and government troops movements well in advance.

The same thing occurs today in Afghanistan. Taleban know about most NATO troops operations before they leave their fortified bases. Among Afghans, the strongest bonds of loyalty are family, clan and tribal connections. They cut across all politics and ideology.

Afghans are a proud, prickly people who, as I often saw, take offense all too easily. Pashtuns are infamous for never forgetting an offense, real or imagines, and biding their time to strike back. This is precisely what has been happening in Afghanistan, where arrogant, culturally ignorant US and NATO ‘advisors’ – who are really modern versions of the British Raj’s “white officers leading native troops”- offend and outrage the combustible Afghans.

Those who believe 20-year old American soldiers from the Hillbilly Ozarks can win the hearts and minds of Pashtun tribesmen are fools. Proud Pashtun Afghans can take just so much from unloved, often detested foreign “infidels” advisors before exploding and exacting revenge.

This also happened during the Soviet era. But some Soviet officers at least had more refined cultural sensibilities in dealing with Afghan. US-Afghan relations are not going to flowers when American troops call the Afghans “sand niggers” and “towel heads.”

Many US GI’s hail from the deep south. Many Afghans have just had enough of their foreign occupiers. The Americans have lost their Afghan War. As the Imperial British used to say: you can only rent Afghans for so long. One day they will turn and cut your throat.

The USA is the biggest consumer of illegal drugs in the world, and also not surprisingly the biggest organizer and trafficker of illegal drugs, with American State Institutions playing the leading role.

As the Jewish Mafia boss John Paul Gotti at his trial stated, "Are you kidding, I can't compete with the State" ....the bulk of the business is run by International Jewish bankers using state institutions to enforce the trade for them (The Pentagon, CIA....cynically and ruefully named the Cocaine Importation Agency), and at a more historical level the UK, and the City of London.

Careful Jewish propaganda means that in many Western societies drugs is often associated with criminalized immigrants, and other foreigners from Africa or South America.

The international business may be worth up to $1 trillion......it hasn't been audited accurately.

This aspect and habit of the USA was acquired from the criminal UK State, especially after WWII.

For this reason one presumes, black belt Vladimir Putin and his KGB cohorts after two decades with deliberate American policy to introduce narcotics into the Russian armed forces in Afghanistan in the 1980's...........has not been:

1. Able to figure out why so many of his countrymen perish each year from this problem. It is a real war that is killing Russians in the 100,000's.........and 3 million addicts. The sheer cost to Russian society.

2. His regime has not taken any clear strong concerted action to stop this vile trade from Afghanistan, beyond a few exasperated speeches over the years.

But Putin of course has real not mere symbolic options. He can hasten the exit of the USA from Afghanistan. Second, he can encourage a friendly government in Kabul which is serious about fighting narcotics.........as it is harming Afghanistan itself.

One of the biggest threats to Russia is its de-population...80 million by 2050, 32 million by 2100. Putin suggests more sex for Russians to solve the problem, and yet fourth world Tanzania can manage annual population growths of 4%.

One of the biggest threats to Russia is the International Jewish plot to flood Russia with Afghan drugs, which kills 100,000 of people each year.......it is a WAR against Russia. Putin and his expert KGB have done nothing about this problem.

One of the biggest threats Russia faces in the 21st century is a desire by the International Jews to surround and there after further divide the country for its vast mineral resources. Putin and his KGB experts have made a few speeches about the problem but have been mainly caught on the back foot and defensive.

We ask why the Russian state is so vulnerable, weak and inactive against these clear threats......it after all has vast resources and clear allies with whom to work with at its disposal.

Russia and US Clash Over Afghan Drug Trafficking

This month Washington whose commitment to fighting drug production in the US occupied Afghanistan is widely called into question rolled out a new plan of coordinating the activities of Central Asian republic’s anti-narcotic agencies. The initiative was, however, promptly blocked as potentially counterproductive by Russia, the country hit hardest by the Afghan drug output.

In essence, the US plan codenamed The Central Asia Counternarcotics Initiative (CACI) amounts to forming, with the funding from Washington and under its oversight, special drug enforcement units with extensive powers including access to the operational materials and databases of the police and security agencies of the host republics. All of the five Central Asian republics were invited to join the program which also had to be endorsed by the US, Russia and Afghanistan. Support for CACI was supposed to be expressed in Vienna on 16 February at the Third Ministerial Conference of the Paris Pact Partners on Combating Illicit Traffic in Opiates Originating in Afghanistan in the form of a collective resolution, but passing it proved impossible due to the resistance mounted by Russia.

Serious suspicions arise in connection with Washington’s bid to tap, in the framework of the program, into the bulk of classified data maintained by the law-enforcement agencies of the host republics, as the information can easily be invoked to exert pressure on Central Asian administrations. Moscow cited the argument to convince its Collective Security Treaty Organization partners – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan – to refrain from signing the statement drafted by the US.

The US agenda behind the initiative is to gain stronger political and military positions in Central Asia, while Washington actually lacks the resolve to take practical steps towards suppressing Afghan drug production and trafficking.

The US tendency to cultivate relations with Central Asian republics on a bilateral basis and to route around Russia and the Collective Security Treaty Organization is seen in Moscow as evidence of the above, and the explanations like the one offered by US Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs William R. Brownfield – that the US is neither a member of the group nor even an observer in it – indeed sound unconvincing as it remains unclear why the circumstance should hinder multilateral cooperation in countering the drug threat.

Drug production in Afghanistan has reached ominous proportions and is known to be swelling. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the country’s narcotics output rose by 61% in 2011 compared to 2010 – from 3,600 to 5,800 tons. Notably, over the time the area used for drug cropping expanded only by 7% and most of the output increase is attributable to bumper harvest across the drug plantations. A circumstance not to be overlooked in the context is that the opium prices are rising continuously and added 133% in 2011, meaning that demand for drugs is currently outpacing supply. In 2010, opium price growth was driven by supply contraction as a fairly mysterious fungal decease wiped out a large part of opium poppy crops. Drug production did start to climb in 2011 in the regions where the epidemic had taken place, even in Kapisa, Baghlan, Faryab provinces formerly reported to have completely dropped out of the game.

Overall, drug production has become the key sector of the Afghan economy over the period of the US occupation, and the fact by all means merits deeper analysis.

The UN currently estimates the 2011 revenues of Afghan poppy farmers to top $1.4b, which is equivalent to 9% of Afghanistan’s GDP.

Deploying US special forces in Central Asian republics is a recurrent theme on Washington’s foreign policy agenda. In 2009, for example, the US declared dispatching to all the five of them commando units charged with the mission of keeping secure NATO’s Northern Supply Route To Afghanistan.

The White House went public with a plan to construct security infrastructures in Central Asia in August, 2010. Specifically, US Central Command’s counter-narcotics fund intended to pour over $40m into building training compounds in Kyrgyzstan’s Osh and Tajikistan’s Karatog plus a canine training facility and helicopter hangar near Almaty in Kazakhstan, and into an upgrade of a number of border-crossing checkpoints in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. In the majority of cases, the installations are strategically located – for instance, a facelift awaited Turkmenistan’s Sarahs checkpoint sited on the Turkmen-Iranian border and Kyrgyzstan’s checkpoint in the proximity of Batkent, a position key to the Fergana Valley.

The US interest in Kyrgyzstan drew ample media coverage. Talk began years ago that a US military base was about to pop up in the southern part of the republic which is traversed by a major drug-trafficking route. The June, 2010 outbreak of ferocious inter-ethnic fighting in the Osh and Jalalabat provinces of Kyrgyzstan is oftentimes blamed on the drug mafia.

Ousted Kyrgyz president K. Bakiyev, by the way, was markedly unenthusiastic about admitting to the republic a Russian military base or one to be ran by the Collective Security Treaty Organization but seemed open to the idea of a training center functioning under the US control.

Speaking of the cooperation under the umbrella of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, its drug enforcement coordination must be credited with steadily improving efficiency. The Kanal-2001 raid jointly launched by the group’s members last December led to the seizure of 16 tons of drugs including 500 kg of heroin, over 2 tons of hashish, 9 tons of opium, and around 130 kg of cocaine. In concert, the Treaty partners’ law-enforcement agencies opened over 21,000 criminal cases, 3,400 of them being related to illicit drug circulation. It is indicative of the progress being made that the grab in a similar 2010 stint was modest in comparison, totaling just 7 tons of drugs, while the number of agents involved was several times higher. Moscow’s bilateral ties with Central Asian republics in the drug enforcement sphere also help – thanks to the Russian assistance, Kyrgyz border guards managed to boost the amounts of confiscated narcotics by a factor of 23 over just one year.

The US push for the creation and operation under its control of an alternative Central Asian drug enforcement architecture is naturally seen apprehensively against the background, especially considering that Washington rejects on a wholesale basis the initiatives targeting drug production within Afghanistan. Russia floated a series of proposals at the aforementioned Vienna conference such as compiling an interactive real-time map of drug crops in Afghanistan to guide eradication raids, using satellite surveillance to detect drug trafficking, equipping border guard outposts with advanced technologies, etc., but neither of the ideas resonated with the US. As before, Washington opposes eradication on the pretext that it would leave Afghan farmers unable to fare for themselves, and, moreover, shuns Russia’s initiative to subject to strict control the precursors to heroin and other complex opiates. Precursor codification could make it possible to track their origins and, eventually, to radically cap hard drug production, but it seems that this would not be the result to the US Administration’s liking.

The inescapable conclusion stemming from the analysis of the US position vis-a-vis Afghanistan’s drug problem, attempts to perpetuate in some form its military presence in the country, and efforts to make inroads into Central Asia is that the intensifying flow of drugs from Afghanistan to Russia and across it to Europe is regarded as an at least acceptable phenomenon in Washington.

As NATO continues to shrug off Russian complaints about their “missile defense shield” in Europe, Ambassador Dmitri Rogozin has warned that Russia might review their cooperation with the Afghan occupation, including revoking NATO’s supply route through Russia.

The northern supply route through Russia and Central Asia is the more expensive of NATO’s two routes into Afghanistan, but it is also the only one active after Pakistan closed the southern route earlier this week to protest the US attack on their military bases.

Since the Pakistan route is never all that safe from attack, NATO has taken to stockpiling extra supplies in Afghanistan for short term cuts. But if NATO has managed to alienate both Russia and Pakistan to the point that the closures are long term, Afghanistan could find itself entirely without a supply route.

And neither issue seems like to get solved any time soon, with President Obama refusing to apologize for killing Pakistani soldiers and NATO having spent years dismissing Russia’s concerns about putting missile defense installments along their frontier.

War on drugs is a hoax: US admit to guarding, assisting lucrative Afghan opium trade

Afghanistan is, by far, the largest grower and exporter of opium in the world today, cultivating a 92 percent market share of the global opium trade. But what may shock many is the fact that the US military has been specifically tasked with guarding Afghan poppy fields, from which opium is derived, in order to protect this multibillion dollar industry that enriches Wall Street, the CIA, MI6, and various other groups that profit big time from this illicit drug trade scheme.

Prior to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Afghanistan was hardly even a world player in growing poppy, which is used to produce both illegal heroin and pharmaceutical-grade morphine. In fact, the Taliban had been actively destroying poppy fields as part of an effort to rid the country of this harmful plant, as was reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on February 16, 2001, in a piece entitled, Nation’s opium production virtually wiped out (http://news.google.com/newspapers?n…).

But after 9/11, the US military-industrial complex quickly invaded Afghanistan and began facilitating the reinstatement of the country’s poppy industry. According to the United Nations Drug Control Program (UNDCP), opium cultivation increased by 657 percent in 2002 after the US military invaded the country under the direction of then-President George W. CIA responsible for reinstating opium industry in Afghanistan after 9/11

More recently, The New York Times (NYT) reported that the brother of current Afghan President Hamid Karzai had actually been on the payroll of the CIA for at least eight years prior to this information going public in 2009. Ahmed Wali Karzai was a crucial player in reinstating the country’s opium drug trade, known as Golden Crescent, and the CIA had been financing the endeavor behind the scenes (http://www.infowars.com/ny-times-af…).

“The Golden Crescent drug trade, launched by the CIA in the early 1980s, continues to be protected by US intelligence, in liaison with NATO occupation forces and the British military,” wrote Prof. Michel Chossudovsky in a 2007 report, before it was revealed that Ahmed Wali Karzai was on the CIA payroll. “The proceeds of this lucrative multibillion dollar contraband are deposited in Western banks. Almost the totality of revenues accrue to corporate interests and criminal syndicates outside Afghanistan” (http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/A…).

But the mainstream media has been peddling a different story to the American public. FOX News, for instance, aired a propaganda piece back in 2010 claiming that military personnel are having to protect the Afghan poppy fields, rather than destroy them, in order to keep the locals happy and to avoid a potential “security risk” — and FOX News reporter Geraldo Rivera can be heard blatantly lying about poppy farmers being financially supported by the Taliban, rather than the CIA and other foreign interests.

So while tens of thousands of Americans continue to be harmed or killed every year by overdoses from drugs originating from this illicit opium trade, and while cultivation of innocuous crops like marijuana and hemp remains illegal in the US, the American military is actively guarding the very poppy fields in Afghanistan that fuel the global drug trade. Something is terribly wrong with this picture.

President Obama lost patience with Runaway General's failed strategy

Sacked US General Stanley McChrystal issued a devastatingly critical assessment of the war against a "resilient and growing insurgency" just days before being forced out.

Using confidential military documents, copies of which have been seen by the IoS, the "runaway general" briefed defence ministers from Nato and the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) earlier this month, and warned them not to expect any progress in the next six months. During his presentation, he raised serious concerns over levels of security, violence, and corruption within the Afghan administration.

Details of General McChrystal's grim assessment of his own strategy's current effectiveness emerged as the world's most powerful leaders set the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, a five-year deadline to improve security and governance in his country.

The G8 summit in Toronto called for "concrete progress" within five years on improving the justice system and for Afghan forces to assume greater responsibility for security. David Cameron said a "political surge" must now complement the military one.

But the "campaign overview" left behind by General McChrystal after he was sacked by President Barack Obama last week warned that only a fraction of the areas key to long-term success are "secure", governed with "full authority", or enjoying "sustainable growth". He warned of a critical shortage of "essential" military trainers needed to build up Afghan forces – of which only a fraction is classed as "effective".

He pinpointed an "ineffective or discredited" Afghan government and a failure by Pakistan "to curb insurgent support" as "critical risks" to success. "Waning" political support and a "divergence of coalition expectations and campaign timelines" are among the key challenges faced, according to the general.

It was this briefing, according to informed sources, as much as the Rolling Stone article, which convinced Mr Obama to move against the former head of US Special Forces, as costs soar to $7bn a month and the body count rises to record levels, because it undermined the White House political team's aim of pulling some troops out of Afghanistan in time for the US elections in 2012. In addition to being the result of some too-candid comments in a magazine article, the President's decision to dispense with his commander was seen by the general's supporters as a politically motivated culmination of their disagreements.

General McChrystal's presentation to Nato defence ministers and Isaf representatives provided an uncompromising obstacle to Mr Obama's plan to bring troops home in time to give him a shot at a second term, according to senior military sources. The general was judged to be "off message" in his warning to ministers not to expect quick results and that they were facing a "resilient and growing insurgency".

It came as mounting casualties added to US and UK discomfort. June has been the bloodiest month for coalition forces since the conflict began, with 88 killed. A soldier from 4th Regiment Royal Artillery died yesterday in hospital in Birmingham of wounds sustained in an explosion on 10 June. He had been on patrol with members of the Afghan National Army in Nahr-e Saraj North District, Helmand Province. He was the 308th British soldier killed since the start of the war nine years ago. The death toll is escalating, with 62 deaths this year – almost double the 32 that died in the same period last year.

Nato played down the chances of success. "I don't think anyone would say we're winning," said a Nato spokesman. The revelations provide context to the disagreements between Mr Obama and his general, highlighted in the article in Rolling Stone in which senior White House figures were criticised.

The reality, according to a senior military source, is that General McChrystal's candour about the reality of the situation was an obstacle to Mr Obama's search for an "early, face-saving exit" to help his chances in the 2012 presidential elections. "Stan argued for time, and would not compromise. Rolling Stone provided an excuse for Obama to fire the opposition to his plan without having to win an intellectual argument," he said.

General McChrystal knew "his time was up" and had been told by White House aides his "time-frame was all wrong", with the general thinking in years while the President was thinking more in months, he added.

The general's departure is a sign of politicians "taking charge of this war", a senior Whitehall official said. "The Taliban are feeling the pressure, but we're not harvesting it politically," he said. "Obama sacking McChrystal was a show of strength. What we are seeing on both sides of the Atlantic, at long last, is the politicians starting to take charge of this war. Wars are won when you have a Churchill and an Alanbrooke, when you have a proper balance between political direction and military leadership."

Mr Cameron asked for a political settlement to be mapped out at a special cabinet meeting held at Chequers earlier this month, he said. "Cameron doesn't want to make Brown's mistake of getting bogged down in details instead of doing grand strategy."

He said General McChrystal had been urging Washington to "start the political track as soon as possible" while his replacement, General Petraeus, has argued "that we need to get the upper hand militarily and regain the military initiative, and then negotiate from a position of strength". He said it would take time to recover from General McChrystal's loss, "particularly if Petraeus just ploughs on with trying to get the upper hand militarily".

Admiral Mike Mullen met with President Karzai yesterday to assure him that the new Nato commander will pursue the same strategy followed by his predecessor. He pledged that General Petraeus would also do his best to reduce civilian casualties.

General McChrystal said progress in the next six months was unlikely. He raised serious concerns over levels of security, violence, and corruption within the Afghan administration. Only five areas out of 116 assessed were classed as "secure" – the rest suffering various degrees of insecurity and more than 40 described as "dangerous" or "unsecure".

Just five areas out of 122 were classed as being under the "full authority" of the government – with governance rated as non-existent, dysfunctional or unproductive in 89 of the areas. Seven areas out of 120 rated for development were showing sustainable growth. In 48 areas, growth was either stalled or the population were at risk. Less than a third of the military and only 12 per cent of police forces were rated as "effective".

A strategic assessment referred to in the presentation revealed just how close the strategy in Afghanistan is to failing. It stated that the campaign was "on track temporarily" – but this was defined as meaning that there was "a low level of confidence that positive trends will be sustained over the next six-month period". It also said the Afghan people "believe that development is too slow" and many "still generally mistrust Afghan police forces". Security was "unsatisfactory" and efforts to build up the Afghan security forces were "at risk", with "capability hampered by shortages in NCOs and officers, corruption and low literacy levels".

Afghan security forces

General McChrystal says both the Afghan police (ANP) and army (ANA) were "critically short on trainers – the essential resource required for quality". Out of 2,325 required, only 846 were already on the ground and 660 more were promised.

Governance

The Afghan government was assessed as having "full authority" in only five districts; in 45 more, governance was "unproductive", in 29 "dysfunctional" and in 15 "non-existent". In the "Critical risks" section of his presentation, General McChrystal listed "Governance: ineffective or discredited". ISAF accepted that "governance needs improvement and lags security efforts".

Security

Nato informed that "violence and security varies regionally... focused in localised areas", and "assessments of key district security are improving slightly". However, only a third of 122 "key terrain areas" were regarded as "secure" or suffering "occasional threats". In key areas, 47 per cent of the population were assessed as secure.

Corruption

General McChrystal noted the need to "address principal sources of corruption and grievance" in Kandahar. Nato warned that "corruption remains an impediment to connectivity between the government and its people". Echoes earlier US concerns that the "lack of Afghan government will and the capacity to prosecute narco-corrupt officials continues to undermine development of governance and security".

Justice

Referred to President Karzai's early pledge to "further the reform process within our justice system". But US Department of Defense has since complained courts are "chronically corrupt". McChrystal's recommendations on "Detention operations and rule of law" include "transition to Afghan lead" and "promoting transparency across spectrum of detention activities".

Development/reconstruction

Emphasised need to "create conditions for development", particularly in the south. But there are worries that the government "has become increasingly dependent on contributions from the international community". Although satisfaction with the local electricity supply has risen, many remain without access and the general warns of the need to "significantly expand electrical supply to meet rising demand".
