The Empire Lovers Strike Back

Recently, Norman Mailer and I chatted together at the Royale Theatre in New York, under the auspices of PEN American Center. Part of what I said was reprinted in these pages on January 11, under the title, not mine, “Requiem for the American Empire.” I gave a bit of a history lesson about our empire’s genesis, and I brooded on its terminus last fall, when Tokyo took over from New York as the world’s economic center.

As expected, that wonderful, wacky couple, Norman (Poddy) Podhoretz and his wife, Midge Decter, checked in. The Lunts of the right wing (Israeli Fifth Column Division), they are now, in their old age, more and more like refugees from a Woody Allen film: The Purple Prose of West End Avenue.
.
Poddy was the first to respond. He is the editor of Commentary (circulation 55,000, and allegedly falling; paid for by the American Jewish Committee). He is best known–and by me loved–for his autobiographical “novel,” Making It, in which he tells us that he has made it because he has become editor of Commentary and might one day be a guest at the White House, as he has already been a guest of Huntington Hartford in Nassau.

Over the years, Poddy has, like his employers, the A.J.C., moved from those liberal positions traditionally occupied by American Jews (and me) to the far right of American politics. The reason for that is simple. In order to get Treasury money for Israel (last year $5 billion), pro-Israel lobbyists must see to it that America’s “the Russians are coming” squads are in place so that they can continue to frighten the American people into spending enormous sums for “defense,” which also means the support of Israel in its never-ending wars against just about everyone.

To make sure that nearly a third of the Federal budget goes to the Pentagon and Israel, it is necessary for the pro-Israel lobbyists to make common cause with our lunatic right. Hence, the virulent propaganda.

Poddy denounced Mailer and me in the pages of the New York Post. According to him, we belong to that mindless majority of pinko intellectuals who actually think that the nation spends too much on the Pentagon and not enough on, say, education. Since sustained argument is not really his bag, he must fall back on the ad hominem attack, a right-wing specialty–and, of course, on our flag, which he wears like a designer kaftan because “the blessings of freedom and prosperity are greater and more widely shared [here] than in any country known to human history.” Poddy should visit those Western European countries whose per capita income is higher than ours. All in all, Poddy is a silly billy.

Significantly, the one Yiddish word that has gained universal acceptance in this country is chutzpah. Example: In 1960, Mr. and Mrs. Podhoretz were in upstate New York where I used to live. I was trying out a play at the Hyde Park Playhouse; the play was set during the Civil War. “Why,” asked Poddy, “are you writing a play about, of all things, the Civil War?” I explained to him that my mother’s family had fought for the Confederacy and my father’s for the Union, and that the Civil War was–and is–to the United States what the Trojan War was to the Greeks, the great single tragic event that continues to give resonance to our Republic.

“Well, to me,” said Poddy, “the Civil War is as remote and as irrelevant as the War of the Roses.” I realized then that he was not planning to become an “assimilated American,” to use the old-fashioned terminology; but, rather, his first loyalty would always be to Israel. Yet he and Midge stay on among us, in order to make propaganda and raise money for Israel–a country they don’t seem eager to live in. Jewish joke, circa 1900: A Zionist is someone who wants to ship other people off to Palestine.

Midge was next to strike. But before she launched her attack, in something called Contentions, she put on her thinking cap and actually read what I wrote. I give her high marks for that. Unfortunately, she found my history lesson hard going. But then, like most of our Israeli fifth columnists, Midge isn’t much interested in what the goyim were up to before Ellis Island. She also likes the ad hominem attack. When I noted that our writers seldom speak out on matters of war and peace because so many of them are paid for by universities that receive money from the garrison state, Midge tartly retorted, “He, after all, is not paid by a university but by those great centers of independence, the film companies.” Since my last Hollywood film, The Best Man, was made in 1964, I have been “paid” by that American public that buys my books about the American past, a subject of no demonstrable interest to Midge and Poddy and their friends.

Midge was amazed by my description of how we seized territories from Mexico, including California; annexed Hawaii and Puerto Rico and, of course, the Philippines, where we slaughtered between 100,000 and 200,000 of the inhabitants. Interesting note: American imperialists froth if the figures for those murdered are ever in excess of 60,000 men, women and children, the acceptable statistical minimum for genocide. Then Midge, with that magisterial gooniness that marks her polemical style, told us, “that three of these conquered territories are now states of the United States, and a fourth an independent republic, is evidently beside the point–as, we cannot resist remarking. . . .”

Oh, Midge, resist. Resist! Don’t you get the point? We stole other people’s land. We murdered many of the inhabitants. We imposed our religion–and rule–on the survivors. General Grant was ashamed of what we did to Mexico, and so am I. Mark Twain was ashamed of what we did in the Philippines, and so am I. Midge is not because in the Middle East another predatory people is busy stealing other people’s land in the name of an alien theocracy. She is a propagandist for these predators (paid for?), and that is what all this nonsense is about.

Since spades may not be called spades in freedom’s land, let me spell it all out. In order to get military and economic support for Israel, a small number of American Jews, who should know better, have made common cause with every sort of reactionary and anti-Semitic group in the United States, from the corridors of the Pentagon to the TV studios of the evangelical Jesus-Christers. To show that their hearts are in the far-right place, they call themselves neoconservatives, and attack the likes of Mailer and me, all in the interest of supporting the likes of Sharon and Israel as opposed to the Peace Now Israelis whom they disdain. There is real madness here; mischief too.

“Well, one thing is clear in all this muddle,’’ writes Midge, adrift in her tautological sea, “Mr. Vidal does not like his country.” Poor Midge. Of course I like my country. After all, I’m its current biographer. But now that we’re really leveling with each other, I’ve got to tell you I don’t much like your country, which is Israel.
.
Although there is nothing wrong with being a lobbyist for a foreign power, one is supposed to register with the Justice Department. Also, I should think that tact would require a certain forbearance when it comes to the politics of the host country. But tact is unknown to the Podhoretzes. Joyously they revel in the politics of hate, with plangent attacks on blacks and/or fags and/or liberals, trying, always, to outdo those moral majoritarians who will, as Armageddon draws near, either convert all the Jews, just as the Good Book says, or kill them.

All in all, the latest Podhoretz diatribes have finally convinced me that the time has come for the United States to stop all aid not only to Israel but to Jordan, Egypt and the rest of the Arab world.* The Middle Easterners would then be obliged to make peace, or blow one another up, or whatever. In any case, we would be well out of it. ** After all, the theological and territorial quarrels of Israel and Islam *** are as remote to 200 million Americans as–what else?–the War of the Roses.

A Manifesto for the Truth

In a very short time, the world has learned much about unaccountable secret agencies and about sometimes illegal surveillance programs. Sometimes the agencies even deliberately try to hide their surveillance of high officials or the public. While the NSA and GCHQ seem to be the worst offenders – this is what the currently available documents suggest – we must not forget that mass surveillance is a global problem in need of global solutions.
.
Such programs are not only a threat to privacy, they also threaten freedom of speech and open societies. The existence of spy technology should not determine policy. We have a moral duty to ensure that our laws and values limit monitoring programs and protect human rights.
.
Society can only understand and control these problems through an open, respectful and informed debate.
.
At first, some governments feeling embarrassed by the revelations of mass surveillance initiated an unprecedented campaign of persecution to supress this debate. They intimidated journalists and criminalized publishing the truth. At this point, the public was not yet able to evaluate the benefits of the revelations. They relied on their governments to decide correctly.
.
Today we know that this was a mistake and that such action does not serve the public interest. The debate which they wanted to prevent will now take place in countries around the world. And instead of doing harm, the societal benefits of this new public knowledge is now clear, since reforms are now proposed in the form of increased oversight and new legislation.
.
Citizens have to fight suppression of information on matters of vital public importance. To tell the truth is not a crime.

NSA Spied on World Bank, IMF, UN, Pope, World Leaders, and American Politicians and Military Officers

It came out this week that the NSA spied on the headquarters of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and United Nations.

It was also alleged that the NSA spied on the Vatican and the Pope.

Congressman Rand Paul asks whether the NSA might be spying on President Obama as well.
Congressman Devin Nunes said in that the Department of Justice was tapping phones in the Congressional cloak room.

Sounds crazy …

But it is well-documented that the NSA was already spying on American Senators more than 40 years ago.

And a high-level NSA whistleblower says that the NSA is spying on – and blackmailing – top government officials and military officers, including Supreme Court Justices, high-ranked generals, Colin Powell and other State Department personnel, and many other top officials. And see this:



He says the NSA started spying on President Obama when he was a candidate for Senate:



Another very high-level NSA whistleblower – the head of the NSA’s global intelligence gathering operation – says that the NSA targeted CIA chief Petraeus.

Of course, the NSA also spied on the leaders of Germany, Brazil and Mexico, and at least 35 world leaders total.

The NSA also spies on the European Union, the European Parliament, the G20 summit and other allies.

A confidential government memo admits that the spying didn’t help prevent terrorism:

The memo acknowledges that eavesdropping on the numbers had produced “little reportable intelligence”.

Because the leaders of allies such as Germany, Brazil, Mexico, the EU and G-20 have no ties to Al Qaeda terrorists, the spying was obviously done for other purposes.

The NSA conducts widespread industrial espionage on our allies. That has nothing to do with terrorism, either.  And the  NSA’s industrial espionage has been going on for many decades.

Indeed, there is no evidence that mass surveillance has prevented a single terrorist attack. On the contrary, top counter-terror experts say that mass spying actually hurts U.S. counter-terror efforts (more here and here).

If NSA spying were really focused on terrorism, our allies and companies wouldn’t be fighting back so hard against it.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s New NSA Bill Will Codify and Extend Mass Surveillance of Americans

--  Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and one of the NSA’s biggest defenders, released what she calls an NSA “reform” bill today.

Don’t be fooled: the bill codifies some of the NSA’s worst practices, would be a huge setback for everyone’s privacy, and it would permanently entrench the NSA’s collection of every phone record held by U.S. telecoms.

We urge members of Congress to oppose it.
.

We learned for the first time in June that the NSA secretly twisted and re-interpreted Section 215 of the Patriot Act six years ago to allow them to vacuum up every phone record in America—continuing an unconstitutional program that began in 2001. The new leaks about this mass surveillance program four months ago have led to a sea change in how Americans view privacy, and poll after poll has shown the public wants it to stop.

But instead of listening to her constituents, Sen. Feinstein put forth a bill designed to allow the NSA to monitor their calls. Sen. Feinstein wants the NSA to continue to collect the metadata of every phone call in the United States—that’s who you call, who calls you, the time and length of the conversation, and under the government’s interpretation, potentially your location—and store it for five years.

This is not an NSA reform bill, it’s an NSA entrenchment bill.
.

Other parts of the bill claim to bring a modicum of transparency to small parts of the NSA, but requiring some modest reporting requirements, like how many times NSA searches this database and audit trails for who does the searching.
.

But its real goal seems to be to just paint a veneer of transparency over still deeply secret programs. It does nothing to stop NSA from weakening entire encryption systems, it does nothing to stop them from hacking into the communications links of Google and Yahoo’s data centers, and it does nothing to reform the PRISM Internet surveillance program.
.

Ironically, a bill that claims to bring transparency to the NSA was debated, discussed and modified by the Intelligence Committee today in secret.
.

The bill does make minor improvements in other areas, by explicitly allowing the FISA court to accept amicus briefs in certain circumstances (though it has already done so with existing authority), and authorizing a report to Congress will summarize significant FISA court opinions. Summarize, but not release.
.

Make no mistake: this is not an NSA reform bill at all. Instead it codifies one of the NSA’s most controversial surveillance programs. We urge you to call your Senator to oppose Sen. Feinstein’s disingenuous bill.

RE: I have been invited to write to you regarding your investigation of mass surveillance.  

I am Edward Joseph Snowden, formerly employed through contracts or direct hire as a technical expert for the United States National Security Agency, Central Intelligence Agency, and Defense Intelligence Agency.
. 

In the course of my service to these organizations, I believe I witnessed systemic violations of law by my government that created a moral duty to act. As a result of reporting these concerns, I have face a severe and sustained campaign of persecution that forced me from my family and home. I am currently living in exile under a grant of temporary asylum in the Russian Federation in accordance with international law.
.

I am heartened by the response to my act of political expression, in both the United States and beyond. Citizens around the world as well as high officials – including in the United States – have judged the revelation of an unaccountable system of pervasive surveillance to be a public service. These spying revelations have resulted in the proposal of many new laws and policies to address formerly concealed abuses of the public trust. The benefits to society of this growing knowledge are becoming increasingly clear at the same time claimed risks are being shown to have been mitigated.

• Western Intelligence backing of 'al-Qaeda' and the Muslim Brotherhood since the 1970's in Iran, Afghanistan, Syria and Egypt....which massively destabilizes the world. The policy originates within the British Empire as a tool of subverting SECULAR nationalist movements against British Colonialism in India 1905, Egypt 1928, and Iran 1950's......and adopted very slowly by the USA since the 1970's...and given affect in Iran in 1979, and Afghanistan 1979, Egypt 1981 and Syria 1982.....and ramped up since 2011 via the so called 'Arab Spring' by the CIA/State Departments which have brought Muslim Brotherhood/al-Qaeda/Salafi/Wahabi elements to the fore in Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Iraq and now tragically with the death of 100,000 people, Syria. An evil policy conceived and birthed by the evil British empire to serve its interests cannot be of any good to any nation including the UK, the originator of this evil policy. Such a huge COVERT policy with very little STATE oversight has a massively corrupting effect on the USA/UK and any other state which becomes embroiled in this former British Empire colonial policy.
• The trafficking of narcotics by the CIA/Pentagon and other state agencies has a massively corrupting effect on the USA which is the biggest consumer of narcotics in the world...$1,000 billion annually?....this area is not audited....so nobody can place the precise figure. This policy originated in the evil British Empire from the 18th century and the East India Company specifically, where India was used as the huge plantation for Opium and China acted as the captured market. This policy was adopted by the USA state via the CIA/Pentagon from the 1960'S where WAR would act as a COVER for this new enterprise, and the money laundered in Wall Street and the City in London. This is what the Vietnam War was about 1965--75, which unofficially killed 150,000 American servicemen and 4 million Vietnamese...and the FIXING of narcotics business from SE ASIA into the USA....THROUGH the use of local triad and mafia groups. This what the Afghanistan 'war' is about for the CIA/Pentagon SINCE 2001-2013. Afghanistan acts like India 200 years earlier as a Opium plantation for the CIA/Pentagon, under whose occupation Opium production has skyrocketed...whilst the brave warriors of the CIA/Pentagon fight a fake war with the controlled opposition of the Taliban managed by the CIA funded ISI..in Pakistan. Suffice to say WAR and NARCOTICS are bad combinations for the peace and stability of the world which are packaged as security concerns for the USA of the highest order.

• The USA's drone wars in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia which kill civilians mainly, based on weak intelligence against purported 'al-CIA-duh' targets in such countries. The reality is that such organizations are run by the CIA in the first place......so the USA acting as judge, jury executioner is to say the least extremely illegal.

These above 10 points are as SERIOUS as the all pervasive, intrusive spying in the USA and the world in the hyper-powers quest for total control of the world under 'Full Spectrum Dominance'. A policy formulated by the neocons in the 1990's with Israel's guidance. The above criminality is in CONJUNCTION with illegal surveillance, with each bad habit encouraging and spawning the other. It is a struggle between humanity and a narrow enclosed elite around Wall Street and the City, in London.

Though the outcome of my efforts has been demonstrably positive, my government continues to treat dissent as defection, and seeks to criminalize political speech with felony charges that provide no defense. However, speaking the truth is not a crime. I am confident that with the support of the international community, the government of the United States will abandon this harmful behavior. I hope that when the difficulties of this humanitarian situation have been resolved, I will be able to cooperate in the responsible finding of fact regarding reports in the media, particularly in regard to the truth and authenticity of documents, as appropriate and in accordance with the law.

Our Invisible Revolution

 “Did you ever ask yourself how it happens that government and capitalism continue to exist in spite of all the evil and trouble they are causing in the world?” the anarchist Alexander Berkman wrote in his essay “The Idea Is the Thing.” “If you did, then your answer must have been that it is because the people support those institutions, and that they support them because they believe in them.”

Berkman was right. As long as most citizens believe in the ideas that justify global capitalism, the private and state institutions that serve our corporate masters are unassailable. When these ideas are shattered, the institutions that buttress the ruling class deflate and collapse. The battle of ideas is percolating below the surface. It is a battle the corporate state is steadily losing. An increasing number of Americans are getting it. They know that we have been stripped of political power. They recognize that we have been shorn of our most basic and cherished civil liberties, and live under the gaze of the most intrusive security and surveillance apparatus in human history. Half the country lives in poverty. Many of the rest of us, if the corporate state is not overthrown, will join them. These truths are no longer hidden.

It appears that political ferment is dormant in the United States. This is incorrect. The ideas that sustain the corporate state are swiftly losing their efficacy across the political spectrum. The ideas that are rising to take their place, however, are inchoate. The right has retreated into Christian fascism and a celebration of the gun culture. The left, knocked off balance by decades of fierce state repression in the name of anti-communism, is struggling to rebuild and define itself. Popular revulsion for the ruling elite, however, is nearly universal. It is a question of which ideas will capture the public’s imagination.

Revolution usually erupts over events that would, in normal circumstances, be considered meaningless or minor acts of injustice by the state. But once the tinder of revolt has piled up, as it has in the United States, an insignificant spark easily ignites popular rebellion. No person or movement can ignite this tinder. No one knows where or when the eruption will take place. No one knows the form it will take. But it is certain now that a popular revolt is coming. The refusal by the corporate state to address even the minimal grievances of the citizenry, along with the abject failure to remedy the mounting state repression, the chronic unemployment and underemployment, the massive debt peonage that is crippling more than half of Americans, and the loss of hope and widespread despair, means that blowback is inevitable.

“Because revolution is evolution at its boiling point you cannot ‘make’ a real revolution any more than you can hasten the boiling of a tea kettle,” Berkman wrote. “It is the fire underneath that makes it boil: how quickly it will come to the boiling point will depend on how strong the fire is.”

Revolutions, when they erupt, appear to the elites and the establishment to be sudden and unexpected. This is because the real work of revolutionary ferment and consciousness is unseen by the mainstream society, noticed only after it has largely been completed. Throughout history, those who have sought radical change have always had to first discredit the ideas used to prop up ruling elites and construct alternative ideas for society, ideas often embodied in a utopian revolutionary myth. The articulation of a viable socialism as an alternative to corporate tyranny—as attempted by the book “Imagine: Living in a Socialist USA” and the website Popular Resistance—is, for me, paramount. Once ideas shift for a large portion of a population, once the vision of a new society grips the popular imagination, the old regime is finished.

An uprising that is devoid of ideas and vision is never a threat to ruling elites. Social upheaval without clear definition and direction, without ideas behind it, descends into nihilism, random violence and chaos. It consumes itself. This, at its core, is why I disagree with some elements of the Black Bloc anarchists. I believe in strategy. And so did many anarchists, including Berkman, Emma Goldman, Pyotr Kropotkin and Mikhail Bakunin.

By the time ruling elites are openly defied, there has already been a nearly total loss of faith in the ideas—in our case free market capitalism and globalization—that sustain the structures of the ruling elites. And once enough people get it, a process that can take years, “the slow, quiet, and peaceful social evolution becomes quick, militant, and violent,” as Berkman wrote. “Evolution becomes revolution.”

This is where we are headed. I do not say this because I am a supporter of revolution. I am not. I prefer the piecemeal and incremental reforms of a functioning democracy. I prefer a system in which our social institutions permit the citizenry to nonviolently dismiss those in authority. I prefer a system in which institutions are independent and not captive to corporate power. But we do not live in such a system. Revolt is the only option left. Ruling elites, once the ideas that justify their existence are dead, resort to force. It is their final clutch at power. If a nonviolent popular movement is able to ideologically disarm the bureaucrats, civil servants and police—to get them, in essence, to defect—nonviolent revolution is possible. But if the state can organize effective and prolonged violence against dissent, it spawns reactive revolutionary violence, or what the state calls terrorism. Violent revolutions usually give rise to revolutionaries as ruthless as their adversaries. “Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster,” Friedrich Nietzsche wrote. “And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”

Violent revolutions are always tragic. I, and many other activists, seek to keep our uprising nonviolent. We seek to spare the country the savagery of domestic violence by both the state and its opponents. There is no guarantee that we will succeed, especially with the corporate state controlling a vast internal security apparatus and militarized police forces. But we must try.
.
Corporations, freed from all laws, government regulations and internal constraints, are stealing as much as they can, as fast as they can, on the way down. The managers of corporations no longer care about the effects of their pillage. Many expect the systems they are looting to fall apart. They are blinded by personal greed and hubris. They believe their obscene wealth can buy them security and protection. They should have spent a little less time studying management in business school and a little more time studying human nature and human history. They are digging their own graves.

Our shift to corporate totalitarianism, like the shift to all forms of totalitarianism, is incremental. Totalitarian systems ebb and flow, sometimes taking one step back before taking two steps forward, as they erode democratic liberalism. This process is now complete. Iran stresses defense ties with Russia

Iran’s defense minister says the further expansion of cooperation between Iran and Russia in the defense sector plays a major role in maintaining regional and global security.

Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said it was essential that Tehran and Moscow bolster defense cooperation.
The Iranian minister made the comments in response to a message by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Tuesday to congratulate Dehqan’s appointment as minister of defense.
Dehqan also stated that Russia enjoys a special position in the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy, expressing gratitude to the Russian minister for his letter.
In his congratulatory message, Shoigu called for closer ties between the armed forces of Russia and Iran.
On October 20, Russian Air Force Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant General Viktor Nikolaevich Bondarev paid an official four-day visit to the Islamic Republic and held talks with high-ranking Iranian commanders.
During Bondarev’s stay, Tehran gave Moscow one of its indigenous ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicles as a sign of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
In January, Tehran and Moscow signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to increase security cooperation between the two countries.

Is Germany about to break free from Europe, from the USA, and, in particular, from Zionist Israel?

Since the end of the Second World War Germany has essentially been in a posture of polite deference. (You mean occupied country) This is because it has been blamed for causing the war. The West, however, has been careful not to blame Germany in quite the blatant way that it did after the First World War.

After all, the failings of Western finance capitalism, as manifested in the 1930s Great Depression, were a major part of the causes of the War and the UK, for example, was long willing to let Hitler get away with aggression because it wanted a strong Germany as a bulwark against Soviet communism.

Nevertheless, the Zionists, ignoring other genocides (e.g., of the Rohingya in Myanmar or Tutsis in Rwanda) and, in particular, denying their own creeping genocide of Palestinians, have played upon feelings of guilt to ensure that Germany is thoroughly blamed for the War and so is amenable to aiding, in practice, the expansion of Israel into the lands of others. This has been done through subtle browbeating and much propaganda in films and television (which industries are largely controlled by Zionist interests).

One result of the browbeating has been that the mighty industry of Germany has supplied Israel with Dolphin submarines which now contain nuclear missiles targeted on Berlin, London, Paris and Rome as well as Washington DC and New York.

Yes, the Israelis have targeted their so-called allies because they are implementing the Samson Option in which if Israel falls in any way it will take down everybody else, including its allies.

In the Biblical story Samson destroyed himself but also destroyed his enemies at the same time. Israel’s hundreds of nuclear bombs and missiles ensure that the Option can likely only be defeated if the USA has the technical capability, and the political will, to identify the position of all of the Israeli Dolphin submarines and then destroy them all - at the same time.

An international boycott of Israel could also be effective (as it was with South Africa) but it should never be forgotten that the Zionists are paranoid, spitefully vicious and predisposed to destruction.

Yet Germany is now aware that it has been conned into letting Israel expand on its way to a Greater Israel extending from the eastern shores of the Mediterranean across to the river Euphrates in Iraq; and from Syria down to the river Nile. For sure, the people of Germany will not be tolerating this for much longer.

Moreover, increasingly, Germans have become aware that their country, as part of the P5 + 1, has been conned into putting sanctions on Iran. Germans won’t put up with that for much longer, either.

Germany is also looking for a chance to re-set its relations with both Europe and the USA. In Europe, Germany is bank-rolling an increasingly disastrous European economy. It will not continue to do so for ever and, at some point, together with a group of northern European nations, may decide break free leaving a southern Europe very much behind.

As regards the USA, dear-oh-dear! When apparent friends are suddenly revealed as betrayers, something has to happen, doesn’t it?

Firstly, Germany discovered that its gold, allegedly safely guarded in Fort Knox in America the USA, no longer exists. The key evidence is that in February 2013 the USA Federal Reserve refused to submit to an audit of its gold holdings. Only crooks (or the USA Federal Reserve) do that sort of thing.

Whereupon Germany, very sensibly, demanded that its gold be repatriated immediately. The USA then responded by proposing that Germany’s gold be sent back over seven years. Yet if somebody owes you money but proposes to pay you back over seven years, the writing is on the wall, isn’t it?

The gold situation has been succinctly described by Susan Lindauer who said, “The USA has been storing Germany’s gold and is no longer capable of returning it.” By which is meant that the USA no longer has the gold. She added, “America is decline and as we fall we are behaving more aggressively towards traditional allies.”

Yes, exactly, and Germany is on the receiving end. Life under the East German communist stasi (secret police) was grim not least the betrayals by friends who had been coerced or blackmailed to betray. The present German Chancellor Angela Merkel experienced the ghastly behaviour of the stasi but now what does she find? Why, not only that the German population in general is being spied on but that, she, the German Chancellor for heaven’s sake, has been spied on for over ten years!

To make it all worse (if that is possible) US President Obama thinks he is being clever by giving misleading answers about this matter. Yet there are at least another thirty five world leaders who have been spied on as well so if Obama thinks he can mislead another thirty five times he is mistaken.

Germany, among others, is waking up to the fact that the USA has become an arrogant spying monster (although those Iranian students in 1979 were the first to recognize the truth when they took over the American Embassy calling it “The Conquest of the Spy Den”!)

All in all, Germany is waking up to European weakness, to the betrayals of the USA and to the evils of Zionism particularly in its control of the USA. Soon, Germany could be breaking free of Europe, of Zionism and of the USA (and not before time….)

After the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor and the United States enters the war, why did Hitler refuse to alter his priorities. He remains committed to the destruction of the Soviet Union.

WHY did Hitler insist on two contradictory objectives in 1942: Stalingrad on the Volga River and the oilfields of the Caucasus. How this division of strength led to disaster.....both feet in two different boats in the river.

Why did Hitler meet his military commanders in abnormal situations, rather than in mature, professional, civilized scenarios.....with tables, chairs, files and agenda. Instead with maps, with all standing up, and Hitler leading the discussion as a 'military expert' and strategist.....or Hitler would be sitting down whilst the senior generals would stand up like naughty boys greeting the headmaster.

Why did Hitler insist on a frontal assault to eliminate the Kursk salient in Russia in July 1943, leading to a stunning defeat and a massive Soviet counter-offensive that drives the Germans far to the west by the end of 1943. Most German commanders were against an assault on Kursk, preferring a defensive posture against the Soviets.

As I said, just for fun. And to provide debate ammo if one of my gentle readers is presented with the “If the USA hadn’t stopped Hitler, we’d all be speaking German now” tirades. Sigh.  Even without the USA, Hitler’s empire would have come crashing down sooner or later. A combination of strategic over-extension, resistence movements, and Hitler’s folly would have destroyed the Third Reich one way or the other. Not to even mention that it was Russian armies rolling inexorably westward that destroyed Hitler’s armies. In any event though, it is astonishing some of the blunders Hitler made. No wonder the Allied High command sometimes joked that Hitler was their greatest ally:

1. Battle of Britain. When Hitler ordered the Luftwaffe to “take out” the Brits, the Luftwaffe sensibly enough began their campaign by trying to destroy the RAF. By the RAF’s admission, they nearly succeeded, in fact they were about two weeks away from pretty much shutting down the RAF and controlling the skies of Britain. Then Hitler got involved and ordered the Luftwaffe to attack the British cities instead, especially London. Which did nothing but piss the British off and freed to RAF to concentrate on regaining control of the skies over Britain. London burned, but German casualties mounted to the point where they had to call off the campaign, and that was that.

2. Cancellation of weapons programs. After the Fall of France in 1940 Hitler was so confident of victory that he cancelled most weapons research programs, insisting that the war could be won with the weapons they had. Two years later when the Germans were being outclassed on all fronts by next-gen Allied weapons, the programs were all frantically restarted. Two years had been lost though, and worse, key engineers and such had died in Russia. Germany did manage to produce some impressive weapons, but never in any quantity and most of them never had the bugs worked out and  thus weren’t terribly reliable in practise.

3. Invasion of Russia. There were multiple mistakes made here, just attacking Russia for one was incredibly optimistic. Compounded by a six week delay in the attack so Hitler could pointlessly bail out Mussolini in the Balkans. And then the Germans made no preparations for  a long war because Hitler assumed Russia could be completely defeated the first summer. He ordered Leningrad to be surrounded, not captured! And Hitler fatally delayed the push for Moscow by diverting his panzers to the stalled southern front. Unlike in Napoleon’s time, Moscow was the absolute centre of the Russian railroad network, and if the Germans had captured the city and the rail connections south of the city, it would have crippled the Russian war effort.

4. The “No retreat” order. This is Hitler’s biggest mistake in Russia and one of the biggest military blunders of all time. When the war in Russia started going badly during the first winter, Hitler ordered his troops to never retreat under any circumstances. This is insane in general because there’s no point standing your ground if you are outnumbered and getting the crap beat out of you. Doubly insane because the only real advantage the Germans had over the Russians was that the German troops were far more mobile. So it made far more sense to retreat when attacked and then counterattack after he Russians had advanced beyond their supply lines. The one German general with the stones to defy Hitler, Manstein, did this a number of times with devastating effect.

5. Me-262 as a bomber. The Me-262 was a beautiful plane, in some ways a decade or more before its time. It was the world’s first jet interceptor and could fly rings (literally) around the best Allied planes of the time. The Me-262 was conceived, designed, and developed as a jet interceptor, a plane specifically designed to hunt down and destroy Allied planes. Hitler ordered it into full production … as a bomber. His minions nodded, and quietly continued to develop it as an interceptor. Someone tipped Hitler off though, and he made sure it was developed as a bomber. In trial runs few pilots were even able to get their bombs within a mile of the targets. The Me-262 was a complete (and predictable) failure as a bomber. By the time a few Me-262 interceptors saw action they were too few too late to change anything.

6. No women labourers. Did the Nazis use slave labour in their factories because they were mean people? Well, yes, but they were also motivated by a severe shortage of factory labour … because Hitler had decreed that German women were not to do factory work. Millions of American and British women went to work on assembly lines freeing up millions of men for military duty. The Germans suffered terrible manpower shortages during the war, while millions of German women sat at home.

7. War on USA. Hitler declared war on the USA right after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Why? He thought it would be good for morale. (Most of his dumbf*ck ideas were based on thinking like that.) Maybe the USA would have declared war on him anyhow, but it was crazy to simply give Roosevelt what he wanted.

8. More Russian errors. In i942 Hitler ordered his armies to seize the oil fields in the Caucasus and the city of Stalingrad, spreading his armies far too thin. As a result his forces failed to capture the oil fields, and suffered crippling losses at Stalingrad.

9. The Battle of Kursk. At Kursk in 1943 Hitler ordered a massive attack even though the Russians clearly knew he would attack Kursk. The German armies last great offencive flung themselves against massed Russian defenders dug in with huge numbers of anti-tank weapons and legions of modern Russian tanks. It was the biggest tank battle in history, and a crushing defeat for Germany. The battle of Stalingrad guaranteed that Germany was not going to win its war with Russia, Kursk guaranteed that the Russians would win.

10. Battle of the Bulge. Hitler’s last gasp attempt to win the war. He attempted to repeat his success of 1940 by attacking the Allies the exact same way. Even though his forces were vastly smaller, didn’t have the fuel to do the job, and were facing a vastly superior enemy than the French army of 1940. The attack had zero chance of success, it would have been far more sensible to attack the Russians and try to slow down their advance.

This was true in battle, where the German military fought ferociously, and with the German occupation, which brutally exploited occupied countries and committed planned genocide against the peoples of Eastern Europe. While The Allies produced enormous numbers of just a few types of simple, reliable, and combat proven products (weapons, aircraft, tanks, vehicles, engines, etc), the German military used a very large number of types, which not only reduced production rates but also required mobilizing inventories of spare parts for all. The German military and the enthusiast Hitler demanded the most advanced weapons, even when not fully developed, and endlessly demanded improvements and special variants in their constant quest for the ultimate weapons, and this further reduced German weapons production rate and the reliability of some new types. German development and production were also seriously hampered by the political rivalries and organizational chaos of Hitler's regime. Eventually Hitler nominated Albert Speer, an organizational genius, to manage military production, but it was too late, and even then Speer was not given full authority.

With the obsession for advanced weapons, the German leaders and Generals also neglected less glorious but critical items such as trucks, infantry vehicles, and winter readiness, so beside its formidable tank divisions, the German army was still a large infantry army which had to walk great distances and relied heavily on horses, and it was not equipped for the harsh Russian winter. The German military was one of the most capable and formidable armies in history, but it was imbalanced, and its domination over the military industry reduced its efficiency, and often led it to develop and produce, too little and too late, very impressive but often immature or relatively ineffective advanced weapons, instead of large amounts of greatly needed mature weapons and other equipment.
