Fossil fuels are here to stay, and until China finds viable alternatives, they will continue to play an important role in human civilisation.
Modern human civilisation cannot exist without fossil fuels, and especially crude oil.
Soviet scientists under Stalin in the 1940s thought crude oil was a naturally recurring mineral created by the earth. It never runs out.
1. Transportation & Energy Fuels
Gasoline (Petrol): Used in passenger vehicles and light-duty combustion engines (~42%–50% of a barrel). [1, 2]
Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel / Diesel Fuel: Used in heavy-duty trucks, buses, trains, and agricultural equipment. [1, 2]
Jet Fuel & Kerosene: Used for commercial and military aircraft, as well as heating and lighting. [1, 2]
Hydrocarbon Gas Liquids (HGLs): Propane & Butane: Used for residential/commercial heating, cooking, and industrial energy.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): Used as a portable fuel and chemical feedstock. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Residual Fuel Oils: Heavy oils used to power large ocean-going ships, industrial boilers, and power plants. [1, 2]
2. Lubricants & Greases
Motor Oils & Engine Oils: Used to reduce friction in automotive and industrial machinery.
Industrial Greases: High-viscosity lubricants for heavy gears, bearings, and mechanical assemblies.
Mineral / Process Oils: Used in rubber compounding, metalworking fluids, and transformer coolants. [1, 2, 3]
3. Waxes & Heavy Residues
Paraffin Wax: Used in candles, food packaging coatings, crayons, and cosmetics.
Microcrystalline Wax: Used in adhesives, sealants, and moisture-barrier packaging.
Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline): Used in personal care, pharmaceuticals, and protective ointments.
Bitumen (Asphalt): Heavy bottom-of-the-barrel residue used for road paving, roofing shingles, and waterproofing.
Petroleum Coke (Petcoke): A carbon-rich solid used in steelmaking, aluminium smelting, and as fuel. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
4. Petrochemical Feedstocks (Base Chemicals)
Through steam cracking and refining, base hydrocarbons (ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, xylene, and methanol) are converted into intermediate building blocks: [1]
Plastics & Polymers: Polyethene (PE): Plastic bags, containers, film, and pipes.
Polypropylene (PP): Bottle caps, automotive parts, thermal wear, and food containers.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): Construction pipes, wire insulation, and medical tubing.
Polystyrene (PS): Packaging foam, disposable cutlery, and insulation.
Polyethene Terephthalate (PET): Synthetic beverage bottles and polyester fibres. [1, 2]
Synthetic Rubbers: Styrene-butadiene and neoprene: Used in vehicle tyres, shoe soles, belts, and industrial hoses. [1, 2]
Synthetic Fibres:Polyester, Nylon, Acrylic, and Spandex: Used in clothing, carpets, upholstery, and ropes. [1, 2]
5. Industrial & Consumer Chemical Products
Detergents & Surfactants: Petrochemical-based cleaning agents, soaps, and emulsifiers.
Paints, Coatings & Adhesives: Solvents, epoxy resins, super glues, and binders.
Fertilisers & Pesticides: Ammonia-based agricultural fertilisers and crop-protection chemicals derived via natural gas/petrochemical processing.
Pharmaceuticals & Medical Supplies: Salves, active-ingredient synthesis bases, single-use IV bags, syringes, and PPE (gloves, masks).
Cosmetics & Personal Care: Lotions, shampoos, perfumes, and lipsticks containing mineral oil or petrolatum derivatives.
Refrigerants & Solvents: Dry-cleaning fluids, acetone, and cooling gases. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
(i). The impact on domestic fertiliser production, which will severely impact agricultural production.
